Derek DelGaudio: NYC Run extended through December 30th

Postby Richard Hatch » June 29th, 2017, 12:52 am

In this 20 minute BUILD interview by Lawrence O'Donnell with Derek DelGaudio and director Frank Oz, in the last few seconds it is revealed that the show's NYC run has been extended "at least through December 30th":

I'm curious: Does anyone know if this is a record run for a one man performance of magic in a NYC theater? Obviously, performers like Steve Cohen have had longer runs in non-theatrical venues, and the multi-performer Monday Night Magic has been running longer, but those are quite different than a daily theatrical performance by a single performer. Ricky Jay enjoyed several different runs in NYC theaters, but were any this long? Any others?

Does Doug Henning in The Magic Show count? I'm not sure how long he was starring in the show before he was replaced, but I think it was at least a year and a half, which would make it at least 600 performances for a normal Broadway schedule.

Could be. I had read something that said he had taken a two month vacation in 1976, so I was trying to be conservative (Magic Cafe-ers will appreciate that this is the first time ever I have tried to be conservative.)

BTW, I just saw In and Of Itself this evening, and it's an absolute must see. There are so many extraordinary moments, but my favorite was not even a magical one: it was DelGaudio's take on the six blind men and elephant story. I'll never hear that story again the same way. He was absolutely right.

Scheduled to close August 19. It's on TDF occasionally. Really, really, really...see it. What if Spalding Gray also happened to be a sleight of hand artist...?

I think Paul Daniels had a long run somewhere or other. Possibly the Prince of Wales theatre in London. Of course I may well be wrong.

Daniels clocked up just short of 2 years at the prince of wales theatre in the west end (1500 seats, 8 show per week plus also recording the tv show at the same time) and I believe he still has the record for the longest “named performer” run in the west end.

Jack, thank you for your reflections on Derek DelGaudio's performance. I delayed reading it until after seeing the show - tonight.
It was remarkable. It's not a magic show as you mentioned but an experience with moments of astonishment.

Our own Richard Hatch urged me to see it; thank you for the nudge, Richard.
And Derren Brown raved about it.

Go see it. You have until August 19, 2018.
