I was startled to find the author exposes Copperfield's Flying while writing a story about The Haunted Mansion/Pepper's Ghost!

The author didn't expose anything. Patents are public information. The person who filed the patent exposed it.

It's amazing what one can find online through USPTO - inventions by everyone from Pepper himself to Gaughan to Fiedler. Much of this is so technical that only the most intensely curious would ever invest the requisite time and energy to ruin their enjoyment of a magical performance.
