Magic Castle Happenings – The Good Stuff (July 2015)
Posted: July 1st, 2015, 11:40 pm
The Rockets’ Red Glare
The Magic Castle and the AMA offices will be closed Saturday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.
The Bombs Bursting in Air
It’s not a bomb, it’s a buyout. The Castle will be closed the evening of July 6 for a private shindig. And the club will open at 8PM on Wednesday, July 22 (there is a private party between 5 and 8PM).
Gave Proof Through the Night
100 proof, that is—well, if that’s your thing. The Annual Soapy Smith Night is on July 12 in the Inner Circle starting at 6PM. Costume contests, “gambling” (the member’s $10 gets you some “Soapy Dollars” with which to get you started), a silent auction, and all manner of 19th century within reason fun and frivolity is in order. All members welcome and the event benefits the Dai Vernon Fund.
That Our (Freak) Flag was Still There
They’re not “freaks,” they’re freakin’ good! Here is the July Lecture schedule:
7/5 – Hannibal
7/12 – Rafael Benatar
7/19 – Justin Miller
7/26 – Boris Wild
The Land of the Free
Okay, it’s not free, but there is a significant discount for members! On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week Executive Chef Jason Sperber puts together a special menu not only for us, but also the vegetarians and vegans. Those dishes are available all week long; just ask your butler. As soon as July’s menu is published, I will post it.
The Home of the Brave
It doesn’t take a lot of courage to enjoy the Houdini Séance. But a little bravery doesn’t hurt, especially when Rob Zabrecky acts as the host for the non-dining séances. These will take place on July 16 with four shows: 6, 8, 9:45, and 11PM. Just $35 ($45 includes the new Houdini Coin) per person. The usual age restrictions and dress code apply for these special events. (Hmmm … maybe one of these non-dining séances could be scheduled for a future Young Adult’s Nights, he says, thinking out loud.) For information and reservations, contact the AMA Spirit Director Josh Stern at jstern[at]magiccastle[dot]com or at extension 303.
Speaking of Young Adults …
The always popular Young Adults Nights will be July 27 and 28 (and happens to coincide with our “Future Stars” week when the Castle Juniors take over the showrooms). The rules are simple: Young adults aged 13 and up, who must follow the dress code, are admitted into the clubhouse during normal business hours. These are always popular nights, so get your reservations now!
They’re Aces, Man
or …
Harry Lorayne Would LOVE This!
Magicians love Ace tricks, and David Regal and Steve Valentine will be performing and teaching “as many Ace tricks as they can” at a special Member Perk on July 13. 8PM in the Peller Theatre. Magician Members Only.
If You Already Know This, Move On
But if you didn’t, then maybe you will want to attend the “Divination for Magicians” perk with Scott Grossberg on July 15. I’m sending the start time to you via telepathy … I’ll wager you can get it … that’s right! 8PM! See, you already know one technique. But you’ll learn a lot more at this two-hour event, which will be in the Peller Theatre. Magician Members only.
Pardon Our Dust
Commencing on July 27, the Peller Theatre will be closed for a facelift. The closure is scheduled to stay in effect through August 12. (FYI: Max Maven is scheduled to christen the refurbished room starting on August 13.)
Skip Ahead, Skip Ahead, Skip Ahead
Looking ahead, Dennis Forel will be teaching “Balloon Sculpting 101-A” on August 19 at 8PM in the Inner Circle (all members are welcome).
The fall swap meet will be on Saturday, September 12.
