Interesting article in today's WSJ on the importance some NBA players place on getting regular petticures and manicures. As one player put it: "Your feet are your business," while another player (known for his stealing prowess) said of his hands: "These (sic) my moneymakers...I might as well take care of them." http://www.wsj.com/articles/to-buff-up- ... ding_now_6
Eugene Burger and Ken Weber have written favorably regarding manicures for professional close-up performers. I was wondering if any of you pros out there get regular manicures. If so, is it primarily a cosmetic/presentation issue or does it also help with your sleight of hand?

Re: Manicures?
Frank Garcia always had manicured fingernails. He was the only magician in New York who I saw regularly who'd had that done.

Also read what Eugene Burger famously has to say on the subject.

While they were well manicured, they were also quite long. Even though he was a good friend, Steve Dacri's nails somewhat creeped me out.

Roger Klause sported manicured nails that were polished to a squint-inducing high gloss. I accused him of using them as shiners. He neither confirmed nor denied my allegation.

Did Roger tell you there was a call for you on the phone ... the bone phone?

To me, a manicure is nothing more than a self indulgence compared to getting a shave in a barber shop. Magicians who invest in the proper tools never have to "get their nails done". These tools are higher priced but the investment will pay off.
Re: Manicures?
Hey Chas, care to name these expensive tools?

Just like a magic prop the best is always more expensive. I recommend Solingen steel for all your manicure tools.A man should never paint his nails. A good buffer with buffing polish is all you need. You can check this out: http://www.zamberg.com/zb/nail-clippers-72l.ashx This is just one example.
