Criss Angel is doing four shows "in New York" ... out on Long Island.
Damn, the hyperbole is amazing:

"Angel is ... the biggest name in the world of magic."
Then why isn't he on Broadway? "The Illusionists" are.

"The broadcast of his live "Building Implosion" episode drew a crowd police estimated at 50,000 to the venue in Clearwater, Florida, which is the largest crowd for any magician, thus rivaling the legendary Harry Houdini. "

Houdini was hugely famous around the world. The level of his fame at a time when there was no TV or Internet is quite amazing. He was also a pioneer.

Dancer and choreographer Alex Cole performed for 75,000 attendees and 81 million TV viewers as "rock magician" Elvis Presto at Super Bowl 23 in 1989.
Of course, most of those watching were actually going to he bathroom or getting a beer, so who know how many actually saw him.
