Final Issue of Fulves' Prolix

Postby Matthew Field » September 14th, 2013, 9:02 am

Issue #10, the last [sob] in the Prolix series, arrived today in England, and it looks great. It's 70 pages long, bringing the total for the run to 700, and includes several props. Contributors include John Scarne, J.W. Sarles, Jack Avis, Robert Neale, Roy Walton, Ken de Courcey, Walt Rollins, Mel Bennett, Neal Elias, George Mackenzie and J.N. Hofzinser, plus 26 tricks by Karl himself, the usual comments section and a full, separate, index.

Karl has announced his next series of 10 issue publications, each issue about 20 pages, which will include 10 separate accompanying publications. Cost is $100 plus $50 U.S. postage ($100 postage outside the U.S.). That seems like a bargain to me.

Needless to say, I'll be subscribing.

Sooo

How does one subscribe to the elusive Mr Fulves' publications?

I hear it's tougher than getting on the mailing list for The Crimp.

Regards

Andrew

Whoops! I left off Karl's address:

Karl Fulves, P.O. Box 433, Teaneck, NJ 07666, USA.

Payment via U.S. dollar check only! If you want a response to anything, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. (Obviously, U.S. stamp!)

Prolix Issue 10 arrived in Indiana yesterday (Wed 25 Sept). Karl is taking orders for the new magazine (10 issues of about 20 pages each plus 10 separate manuscripts on a variety of subjects), but it has no title yet.

Aside from Fulves' journals, are there any other independently-published close-up magazines being published now? Antinomy, Penumbra, Precursor, that sort of thing.

Not that I know of. Several sleight-of-hand periodicals stopped before their final issues were delivered, so it's possible that we'll see some of those finished eventually .

It seems that everyone would rather put out their items as one-trick DVDs.

If I was so inclined (which I'm not!), I could probably pull a periodical like this together again, but the real problem is that they are break-even or money-losing propositions. The way to do it today would be to sell it as a download which includes both text and video. Then there's the problem of people passing it around. I don't know who would go to the trouble for near zero compensation.

Most notably there's El Manuscrito, now available in English:

http://www.grupokaps.com/manuscrito/casa.php

There also appears to be a publication called The Bullfrog:

http://magicalsleight.com/product/Bullfrog

The Bullfrog is reviewed here with much profanity by Larry Horayne (sic):

- Issue #0: http://larryhorayne.wordpress.com/2013/ ... nd-a-miss/
- Issue #1: http://larryhorayne.wordpress.com/2013/ ... s-im-back/

Larry Horayne is obviously a Brit (easily seen by his use of language), pissing on other Brits. Seems to be a way of life.

Hi everyone,

I'm Alex, from MagicalSleight.com and creator of the Bullfrog magazine.
I'm not here to advertise, just to answer shortly: This Larry Horayne guy seems to be in love with himself, trying to make the world believe that he is a card expert. Unfortunately that is not the case. We know who this guy is, that' s enough for us.

The Bullfrog is very confidential, but we try to publish some material we believe to be good, at least tricks we actually perform.
We are french, writing in english which is not easy for us (as you probably can see in this post :? )

here is another reviews so that you can hear another opinion

Off topic, but... I subscribe to the Bullfrog, and I enjoy the heck out of it. Very good material (mostly not for beginners), good sense of humor, and well worth the subscription price (even includes a tiny prop or two, and video links via QR codes). And that's just the first three issues.

I think you may not be familiar with the humour behind the Larry Horayne blog. Humour aside, he may not be a card expert along the lines of Mr. Kaufman or Bill Goodwin, but from reading the review he makes some valid points. I would love to see a rebuttal of all the points he made, but to dismiss an opinion as "he is no card expert" without addressing the content is a bit premature.

It is unfortunate that the only thorough review of Bullfrog that is online is in the Larry Horayne blog.

Okay... back on topic:
Has anyone received any update(s) regarding Karl's next periodical?

Also... re: Bullfrog: they sadly dropped off the face of the Earth following their 3rd issue (just like Jim Sisti, and David London, among others). What a shame that these guys don't even respect their customers enough to send an announcement outlining their intentions to fulfill their obligations.

I sent a check last November and it was just cashed last week. Might be a good sign.

Thanks, Mark! That does sound like a good sign. It'll be an even better sign when I see that he's cashed my check, sent last September, as well. :) Anyway, looks like progress is in the works. Exciting!

Can you share the gist of it?

I'd like to subscribe to this -- should I send him a check, or is the project postponed?

The note said that the project has been postponed longer than anticipated. Since the banks will not cash checks held longer than a year he decided to cash them now instead of asking everyone to write new checks. If anyone is uncomfortable with that arrangement they can ask for a refund.

Yup. I received the same letter this afternoon. Since I wrote my check in September 2013 it had already passed it's anniversary. Simple enough... I wrote a new check and sent it off in the thoughtfully provided SASE.

Looking forward to the new publication.

A possible reason why the final issue of Prolix was delayed: the death of Karl's son.

Peter Fulves, age 49 of Sarasota, Fl, formerly of Hollywood, FL, Teaneck, NJ and Montclair, NJ, died on June 6, 2014. His extraordinary personality and sense of humor reflected his enormous love for life and for the people whose lives touched his. He was sustained by his passion for music. His extended family and many friends will cherish the memory of his brilliant creative gifts. Contributions may be made in his memory to help the work of SoundLounge Music, 1928 Racimo Drive, Sarasota, FL 34240. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/herald ... GnPqp.dpuf

Sound Lounge Music
Our premiere Jazz artist is releasing his music for the first time.
Pete Fulves is an extaordinary Jazz musician who has been haulted by a terrible car accident in 2005.
Pete now at the age of 48, lives in a nursiung home in a wheel chair, unable to speak, play his piano or tend to his own basic needs.
We have taken his catalog of over 100 songs and put them together on CDs, to sell and help Pete afford a communication device and other basic needs items for a better quality of life.
Pete Fulves comes to the studio transported by his parents, who are in their 70's and 80's.
He communicates through gesture and his eyes and facial expressions.
After spending the past two years with Pete in the studio we have come to realize how much of a person is inside his mind. Purchasing his music will help us to help him.
