No, no leg-breaking here, and he repeats over and over again how nicely he treats the chicks and how much he takes care of them. But there's no question that they're being mistreated in a modern sense.

I believe he was actually tried for animal cruelty but managed to get off.

The performance is certainly unique--he's reaching into his shirt in plain sight for absolutely no reason during the loading sequences.
