An Ursula Martinez imitator...

Postby Tim Ellis » February 21st, 2012, 4:37 pm

... who completely misunderstands the point of Ursula's act...

What is most bizarre is that this clip was posted by a magic company to promote their magic vanishing silk trick...

"Kingmagic" as shown on this pitiful TV spot, is the name of the company stealing Kevin James' Bowling Ball effect, Joe Porper's Strong Box and Latimer's Laser routine (among many others).

So, I guess stealing whole acts is next...

Stealing whole acts is not new. Johnny Hart took Jack Kodell's act. He doesn't seem to have suffered.

Were colored parakeets so common in magic that posing for a picture with one on each finger was about like posing with a fan of cards?

No, colored parakets were not common at all. That was Jack Kodell's act.

Colored parakeetes very well may have been JKodells Concept .....
But in J.Harts case what context were the parakeetes incorporated into an act ? as the parakeets were a small segment of his act . There was a card seg , Silk production segment ...& the production of other animals.

My feeling is JH used the parakeetes as a possible core of an act , for Art to advance one has to for lack of a better word 'borrow' digest , comtemplate in hopes that somthing evolves form what the artist has digested.

I have spoken to JHart who has the hightest respect for Kodell but Johnny also feels that his act was unique for its time .

I was in Sydney this week, and saw a vaudeville / circus sort of show called La Soiree at the Sydney Opera House. Sort of a cirque de soleil show, put on by an Australian-based group called La Clique. Anyway, imagine my surprise when I saw that Ursula Martinez was listed as one of the performers.

Unfortunately (?), I attended the 7 pm showing and Ursula was not a performer. I don't know, but I am guessing that she may only perform in the later 10 pm evening slot.

I did see some wonderful performers, though. I am not exaggerating when I say that this show was one of the highlights of my visit to Australia (and I mean that in a good way).

I caught La Clique in Dublin a few years back and Ursula Martinez was one of the performers.

She did three acts.

1. Her TT act
2. An act in which she wore a flash paper bra & panties and smoked a cigarette. You can guess what happened.
3. A funny song on a uke which was actually very good.

She reminds me a bit of burlesque performers. I think a lot of these guys really want to be strippers but don't want to be known as strippers. So they call it Burlesque. And are typically crap.

I agree B

Burlesque is where people that aren't very good at something go and do it with their boobs out and then people come and watch them.

John Archer also plays a mean ukelele, imagine them teaming up for a duet...

That is possibly the best description of Burlesque ever. Exactly what I was trying to say but couldn't find the words.
