The Digital Version of Genii's March Issue is Now Live Online
Subscribers! The digital version of the March 2012 issue of Genii is now live online for your computer: desktop or laptop. (The iPad and iPhone editions should be ready late today or tomorrow.) And remember, it's FREE for all subscribers.
Featured this month is Jonathan Levit on the cover in a recreation of his performance of Howard Thurston as conceived and directed by Jim Steinmeyer. David Regal tells the tale. A video of the recreation of Thurston's Sawing a Woman in Half is included.
We also have a story by Jim Steinmeyer on the restoration of The Magic Castle after its October fire, and a video tour of the restoration led by AMA Vice President Erika Larsen.
The Asian Magicians Association Convention is always fun, this time it was held in Hong Kong and was the site of the FISM Asia competition. Tim Ellis was a performer and judge and also our correspondent.
This month marks the debut of our new columnist, Dani DaOrtiz. He'll perform his trick for you on video in each column, and then the explanation appears in the text. The perfect wedding of new technology and old.
The rest of the issue contains our usual excellent line up (can you tell I'm busy working on the April issue? I don't have time to write the rest of this!). So log in and enjoy the printed material, along with audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer (this month teaching a variation of Stewart James's "Miraskill."
If you're a subscriber who's having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact the office and we'll be happy to help you!

My hard copy arrived today. The effect in Steinmeyer's Conjuring column is fantastic. Off to check out the digital extras.

Re: The Digital Version of Genii's March Issue is Now Live Online
I'm having trouble getting the online version to expand to readable size, a problem I have not had in the past. I get only the thumbnail version. Anyone else having a problem? I'm using chrome as the browser, but haven't had this problem with chrome in the past...

With IE 9.0, I had to click on thie issue on the Alexander home page. Then I had to click on the issue again in the upper left hand corner to get it to go to full size. I don't seem to recall having to do the second step before (but I could be wrong).
Great issue, BTW, RK. daOrtiz fooled me bad.

The same thing happened to me when I clicked what appears to be the link. When I clicked on the image it worked as usual.

Re: The Digital Version of Genii's March Issue is Now Live Online
When I click on the fanning image I get a box that asks for my name and password even though I am already signed in. Then it says I have entered the wrong name or password. Using Chrome.
This is my first day there so I probably don't know what I'm doing.
And how do you make the past issues bigger? The top two bars take up one quarter of the screen.

When you get the name/password that usually means your account is still being processed. I think it can take a few days.
I'm not sure what changed, but I removed the link on the words for now. Click the image.

Don't understand. I got my access number today an I am going thru the old issues from the forties. I had to sign in and establish an account to do that. I cannot access the current fanning issue at the bottom of the page. Or do I have to wait for another name/password to do that?

You do have to wait probably until tomorrow when Ask Alexander and the company that host iGenii sync up.
You will not need any other username/password.

Oddly Bent, it takes 24 to 48 hours from the time you first activate and login before your information is pushed to the second database, at the second company, that will allow you to access the digital versions of the past 12 issues. Should be tommorrow sometime.

Clicking on Genii title under the flipping page icon correctly takes you to the magazine. That's been broken a long time... glad it got reported.
Oddly Bent, your subscription data has been updated. You should be able to access iGenii tonight.

Not working for me. I've never had problems in the past, but when I click on the image it opens up a new window like it's about to display the magazine, and then all I get is a blank window with a small oval button at the top left corner that says "View Publication - Token Submit". Nothing happens when I click on it.

Anyone else experiencing this issue? I've tried it in Safari and Firefox. I've quit and restarted the browsers, but to no avail.

Travis, have you looked at the digital versions of the current issues before? You are getting the second login screen because it doesn't recognize you as being in the database which controls the digital issues.

Yes, Richard. I always view the digital issue before receiving my hard copy. I've been viewing them since the very first one.

All videos and audios work fine for me on my desktop, iPad, and iPhone.
Scott M: are you sure the volume is turned up on your device? If the answer to that is yes, then if you're viewing on an iPad or iPhone, please delete and download again.
There is also a volume control on each individual video.

Scott,
Are you talking about the ipad version?
If so, I encountered the same issue. It was driving me nuts but I finally figured out what was going on.
My problem was that I was using the little "Mute/ lock screen rotation" button on my 2nd generation ipad to lock the screen rotation, but for some reason the iGenii app was still interpreting this as a "mute" button.
If you are using the button to lock the screen rotation, try unlocking it and see if the sound plays.
Or go to "Settings", change the function of the button to "Mute", then make sure the button is in the un-muted position.
Hope that was clear...

Re: The Digital Version of Genii's March Issue is Now Live Online
Hi Bob,
Thanks so much -- yes, I was using the switch to lock the screen on my iPad, as I always do. Even toggled off the sound didn't play. But, when I did what you suggested, which was to designate the switch as the mute button and then unlock it, it did work. Strange, because I've played many Genii issues on my iPad without this problem. This is the first time it's come up.
Best,
Scott
