I heard a rumor that a Magician's convention was at the famous Philly Hotel a week before the Legionnaires were there...and that this disease was almost called "The Magician's Disease" Any truth to that?
Legionnaires disease hits Vegas
Re: Legionnaires disease hits Vegas
It was the 1976 SAM national convention. Same hotel, but no one got sick -- hence, I don't think there was ever a push to name the mystery illness after magicians.
I know of one magic dealer who was contacted by the FBI, wanting to know more about this strange chemically treated "flash paper" material. (Apparently, this FBI agent had never worked bunco...)

I was at that convention along with my wife. We were checking out Sunday morning while some of the Legionnaires were checking in. In the first few weeks following the convention several magicians I heard were contacted by phone and asked if they had gotten sick or knew of anyone that had. I only knew of one that had some symptoms after but apparently it was not the Legionnaires disease.
While it was an excellent convention I'm sure most of the attendees were very worried after hearing about the disease. Fortunately for us, to my knowledge no magicians or family members were affected. It appears from later reports that the disease actually started after the Legionnaires began their convention and the magicians had left. A few days sooner and the name might have been The Magicians Disease....
Two interesting articles on the Legionnaires Disease and the downfall of the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel:

The only "diseases" that I encountered at IMX were lack of sleep and Daortiz paralyzing stupefaction syndrome. Dr. Green was no help with either.

Hehe I know that feeling. At The Session, I was the spectator sat next to him on the table throughout. People were commenting afterwards about my "Oh jesus not again" reactions.
