Let's be careful about getting into a political discussion here.

I guess they were both big on publicity. One dared the public to restrain him in some contrivance, the other (venturing a guess) dared the public to expose his contrivances. Both became memorable Halloween figures of a sort.

Not to be a pest, but the message itself is fairly political. A perfect example of the elitism or illiteracy of the left? How else are you supposed to address that?

? Is AC from that town?
Do the folks in that town want to be remembered for Senator McCarthy?

Ann Coulter wrote:"I went to Joe McCarthys birthplace in Appleton, Wisconsin," she told Sean Hannity. "They have a whole museum to Houdini! Houdini lived in Appleton Wisconsin for, like, six months. He wasn't born there, he didn't die there, he wasn't raised there. But it's the Houdini Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin."
There's your magic-relevant, non-political message. Now knock it off, ya pain-in-the-ass. ;)

So the magic-relevant, non-political message is that the Houdini Museum is in Appleton, WI? We knew that already.
Why Joe McCarthy, though?

Agree with ya T.
Houdini is more money in the bank than the other guy.
Re: Ann Coulter would like Appleton to celebrate Joe McCarthy, not Houdini
The commonality is Appleton, not magic. Ya can't answer AMCabral's question without breaking the forum rules so it would be better to not ask...or delete the question.

I suppose each fellow is a legendary cultural figure whose name is shorthand for a certain type of behavior. One of those behaviors is discussion fodder for this forum. Well, both are if you include the Magic Castle thread.

Many don't know this but the whole Mcarthy era idea was really the brain child of Sen Pat McCarran of Nevada. But at that time they wanted to push Sen Joe McCarthy into the public eye so that project was given to him to take the reigns of. But it wasn't Joe's idea at all. Yes McCarran International Airport in Vegas is named after the Senator.
Re: Ann Coulter would like Appleton to celebrate Joe McCarthy, not Houdini
If it was Pat McCarran's idea I could see why he would want to put the heat on the commies and take the heat of the mob.

Re: Ann Coulter would like Appleton to celebrate Joe McCarthy, not Houdini
This is one of the dumbest comments I have seen in quite awhile.
Generally museums and exibits are built for people a town can be proud of claiming.
The alternative would be an embarrassement.
Not that we should forget the past but a "tribute" to that particular past is retarded.
Houdini lived in Appleton longer than six months., claimed it as his home town and obviously they are proud of him and the museum has brought tourists into town who spend money.
Hard not to get into whether you love or hate Coulter's agenda whenever her name comes up but I can't really see what's to debate or discuss here.

Why anyone would insist on comparing Houdini, on one hand, with McCarthy on the other, is something I simply cannot grasp - regardless of municipal recognition.

Re: Ann Coulter would like Appleton to celebrate Joe McCarthy, not Houdini
I'm at a loss as to what the town would present to celebrate the guy. Much comes to mind though so far nothing that depicts something positive. What does she (or anyone) imagine they would celebrate or sell as an attraction to the town?
On the purely magic side I can almost imagine something amusing as patter for a chop cup routine with a red ball - but that's likely over the line for civil discourse here.
