I want to know if Richard has an appreciation of Dave O'Brien

Postby houdini's ghost » November 26th, 2010, 4:30 pm

There was an actor stuntman named Dave O'Brien who really jazzed me in the Pete Smith comedies, but, he played a whole lot of other parts, mostly over at poverty row on Gower.
I just wanted to ask if there are any other Dave O'Brien fans on the Genii Forum.
I would like to announce that sometime, somewhere, Whit "Pop" Haydn and I going to play "the Sunshine Boys." Again, where and when we don't know. Soon, I hope, but, with every day that passes we will require less make-up.
Whit and I knew these guys. Whitey Roberts, McComb. We still know Calvert.
Anyway, I was curious to know if Richard had any feelings about Dave O'Brien.

Dave O'Brien played Captain Midnight in the serial of the same name that came out of radio. Ed Prentiss played the Captain the longest on radio and I was a regular listener. It was sponsored by Ovaltine.

I have a Captain Midnight serial poster that I have to get mounted and framed.

Sorry, if you had mentioned Billy Gilbert, James Finlayson,
Michael Ripper, or many others I might have something to say. But I've never heard of Dave O'Brien!

I went looking for info on Dave O'Brien and it turns out I didn't know half of what he did.
What I remember him for is a lot of "B" Westerns, serials, and these ferocious pratfalls he did in innumerable MGM "Pete Smith" comedies. Never knew he was a writer for Red Skelton.
