Better links can be found in the NY Post and People rather than "Real Bolly Wood" but that is just my opinion: http://bit.ly/9XUbo5

Ignoring snotty comments by anonymous individuals, here's a link to what the future Mrs. Blaine looks like. Let's hope it works out for them. It isn't easy having a successful relationship in the public light.

Congratulations to Blaine on being a dad while being a professional magician.

I wonder why there aren't more professional magicians who have children. I know the reasons are varied and personal, but it just seems kind of curious that to me that there aren't more.
The other one I can think of is Penn.

Just off the top of my head: Harry Anderson, both Blackstones, Andre Kole, Peter Reveen, Dai Vernon, Lance Burton, Mark Wilson, Mike Finney, Robert-Houdin, Thurston ... and DOZENS more (being a former full-time professional performer myself, I suppose I, too, qualify).

Other than the well-known bachelors and openly gay performers (who elect not to adopt), and a few not able to have children (Houdini, for example) I have trouble thinking of many professional magicians over the past two centuries who were NOT fathers.

Greg makes a good point. Not counting dead magicians and people like Richard Kaufman and Dean Dill who are deeply involved in the world of magic, but who arent professional performers, off the top of my head, I can think of: Mac King, David Copperfield, Chuck Jones, John Archer, George Schindler, Whit Haydn, Danny Archer, Scott Alexander, Shimshi, Doc Eason, Michael Ammar, Ivan Amodei, Joe Monti, Larry Wilson, Kalin & Jinger, Michael Weber, Ron Wilson, Paul Wilson, and Suzanne. Obviously I could go on and on.

That was very sneaky, Lovick, the way you tossed you-know-who's name in there. Prove it, I say.

Well, I guess I'm wrong. But why hasn't Criss Angel had kids yet? :)

And Doug Henning didn't.

Richard,

I wasn't trying to be sneaky, and I thought it was common knowledge. I've actually met Michael Weber's kids, and can dig up photographs, if you'll give me some time.

The claim is of the National Inquirer variety and has not been substantiated, so Mr. Lovick's post and follow-up were both snarky.

Neither of my posts were snarky. I misremembered the (un)substantiation of the press stories from a couple years ago--which apparently aren't as common knowledge as I thought--and DC did not acknowledge paternity. I remembered this all incorrectly.

Because of my faulty memory, I didn't think Richard's comment was serious and my follow up was merely a joke.

Apologies to all.

I'm a professional magician and I don't have kids of my own. (I've got step kids/adults, though.) But, I didn't have kids because my first wife was ten years older than me and didn't want kids and my second wife was/is too old to have them. But, I guess it was "meant to be" because my lifestyle/travelling wouldn't have been fair on the kids if I had had some! Either way, I'm not bothered.

Docc Hilford is an excellent, involved father with a beautiful teenage daughter.

There are plenty of pros who've had children and some who haven't, like me.

It's fascinating how these threads derail, often into nonsense.

Let's all list all the professional magicians we can and put if they have kids or not.

Oh no, let's not, that would be really bloody dull.

I'll say "just a joke" before the ruffling of any feathers.

All of which brings to mind a joke from the great comic Carol Leifer (the character of Elaine on Seinfeld was partially based on her)

"I don't have any kids ... (wink, nod) well, none that I know of."

Dang, I had been using this line for some time and honestly thought I wrote it...it does seem odd that a female performer would be using it; doesn't make biological sense

I saw a dull/slow card act years ago where the magician creepily said, "I've got fifty-two delightful children. They are..."

Then some wag in the audience blurted out, "Oh God! Don't fuc**ng name them all, will you!"

Elaine wasn't based on Leifer aside from one element of the character.

Trying to deflect my ignorance of not realizing how many professional magicians have children, I pose this question instead for magician parents (professional and hobbyists alike), - What are the difficulties of practicing your craft while raising a child? Conversely, what are the delights/benefits? Having recently read Ben's Vernon biography, I almost consider that to be a cautionary tale.

Most professional people in show business are self-involved, egocentric narcissists. That is not the psychological profile of a healthy parent.

Others are obssesives, like Vernon, or suffer from other less-than-cheerful issues.

Vernon was not a good father, was uninvolved in their childhood, and was disliked by his children. He was an alcoholic and his son Derek is an alcoholic.

It was a different time when Vernon was raising (or not) his kids. It was a time when children were seen but not heard. I don't believe it was common for adults to spend much time with children...Who would have "taught" Vernon to be a father? These days we have fewer excuses...

A couple of years back I read an article about a professional magician, and he was on the road a lot. One day he came home and his 2-year-old son greeted him at the door by saying "Who are you?" He quit the tour that day.

It probably was easier to be a bad parent back then, because you were much less likely to be harshly criticized for it. Thank god we are mostly past that period.

Thomas Jefferson said, "honesty is the 1st chapter in the book of wisdom".

I think that honesty is helpful - both about ourselves and our heroes. My grand parents and my wife's grand parents managed to be great parents even though they were contemporaries of Vernon. I don't think it was just the age he lived in.

None of this takes anything away from Vernon's greatness - great men often have great flaws. But the truth is instructive and help me to be a better person/father/husband.
