The October Issue of Genii is in the Mail ...

Postby Richard Kaufman » September 13th, 2010, 8:47 pm

Let me hear when your copy arrives!

The man on this months cover is actually wearing his Halloween fineryin David Acers case, that means a tuxedo! This month youll have the pleasure of joining David Regal as he interviews this Man from Montreal. Doubting Dave himself tells you a bit about his show Mystery Hunters which is now being syndicated in the U.S., then Mr. Acer gets his due with a Magicana of his own featuring five excellent tricks.

Ive never been more pleased with the group of columnists in Genii than I am now: what a sterling line-up! Tony Giorgio returns with more colorful language from the fringes of society, and Im honored to be a george ghee with a double george magazine; Max Maven doesnt toss any baloneys when bringing us some george mentalism; David Britland can be trusted never to lay a note on us while delivering a big sting; Jon Racherbaumer, avoiding the intellectual fuzz, delivers a Slant devoid of tom news; Jim Steinmeyer doesnt toss any broads, but does escape from Mrs. Houdini; theres certainly no tom material from Tom Stone, who is the best patch in the business; and Paul Osbornes Halloween illusion is a reverse whiz mob. If this has all been Greek to you, catch up by bying the October issue! * Oh, and our ghee reviewers also dont throw any baloneysDavid Britland, Joe M. Turner, and Danny Orleans give you the straight dope on books, videos, and tricks.

Don't forget: Starting in late October, all subscribers to Genii wont just get 12 issues for their $56, but access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. Thats almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And its all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. If you are a subscriber and havent sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so as soon as possible (to: genii@geniimagazine.com) so theres no delay in getting you access when we launch this new feature in a few months. If you want to access to all of this astounding material and you are not a subscriber, please join us as we make available to you untold magical riches at www.geniimagazine.com.

And we've got a great offer for anyone who wants to subscribe or renew: the three-DVD set "Houdini The Movie Star" from Kino is now available from us for a limited time for 50% off the retail price of $40. YOU pay only $20, postpaid anywhere in the US. (Add $5 postage for Canada and $11 postage anywhere else in the world.) This 3 DVD set includes most of the surviving films and footage of Houdini and is only marked down to $36 on amazon.com, so our price is a whopping $15 less. We don't sell it separately: subscribe today or renew your existing subscription for one year and you can receive this extraordinary value.

Remember that the price of Genii drops from the $6 cover price to only $4.50 per issue when you subscribe for one year AND new subscribers get a free copy of the Harry Anderson/Jon Racherbaumer 32-page Jinx). Please visit the Genii website and subscribe today at www.geniimagazine.com.

Yes, I should mention this. Don't throw the polybag in which your issue comes away: it has a number on the label, above your name, which will be your Activation ID when the Genii Archive goes live for all subscribers.

Richard,

I won't need the number on the bag if I already have access from my lifetime subscription correct?

Just realized there is also a subscription (life?) end date next to the number. Slightly creepy. :D

Thank you. Needless to say, we are mortified at the error, but we've changed our system of creating the table of contents each month so hopefully it won't happen again.

I'm left handed and always thumb through magazines from the back cover to the front. The TOC is the last thing I see - I have not gone that far yet. I'll most likely never notice a problem.

Thanks for the kind words, folks.
Regarding the cover, believe it or not (in fact, put one finger on "believe" and one finger on "not," then lift either finger. If you lifted "not," nice job - we'll keep "believe." If you lifted "believe," no problem - we'll get rid of "not."), the photo was taken almost exactly as you see it. And it was completely unplanned. I'm actually standing on the edge of a very small waterfall that the photographer and I noticed as we were leaving an indoor shoot - right behind my feet there's a 12-inch drop. But with the photo taken from straight on and quite far back, the drop became invisible and the water seems to flow seamlessly past me. A little touch-up was required to get rid of a few telltale ripples around my shoes, but that's about it.

I know Richard has a rule of thumb for lost issues. Mine still hasn't come (Chicago). At what point is it considered lost?

Thanks......

It is considered lost if you haven't received it by the 21st of the dated month. It may well be sitting in your local post office or regional postal center, just waiting for the day when they decide to deal with the second class periodical mail.

We will replace any issue which does not arrive by that date.

Before the October issue is gone forever, may I recommend buying two copies, cutting the cover off one, and gluing it to the back of the November (Juan Tamariz) issue, thereby creating a double-faced magazine. Next, cut the back off your already mutilated October issue and glue it to the front of your remaining October issue, creating a double-backed issue. You can now leave these two prepared issues on your coffee table with a few other random issues, and when a non-magician guest notices that you have "magazines for magicians," you casually pick up your gimmicked issues and perform a Two-Magazine Monte. Of course you might be thinking, I can buy two copies of any issue for that, but no - only October.

On an unrelated subject, if anyone is interested in joining our new mailing list for updates, free tricks, and news about my next book, due out in 2011, send an e-mail to updates@davidacer.com, or sign up here.
