September Issue of Genii In the Mail! Have you Received your Copy?

Postby Richard Kaufman » August 17th, 2010, 12:28 am

We're very pleased to announce a new premium for all subscribers--something that only Genii, with its rich history, can provide. Starting in the fall, all subscribers to Genii wont just get 12 issues for their $54, but access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. Thats almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And its all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. If you are a subscriber and havent sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so as soon as possible (to: genii@geniimagazine.com) so theres no delay in getting you access when we launch this new feature in a few months. If you want to access to all of this astounding material and you are not a subscriber, please join us as we make available to you untold magical riches at www.geniimagazine.com.

The September issue of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine, now in its 74th year of publication, is in the mail!

Our cover story focuses on a magician who has performed for more people in the last two years than anyone else in the world: Alex Ramon, the ringmaster for Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus's production of Zing Zang Zoom, the first magic circus produced by The Greatest Show on Earth. Jim Steinmeyer, the creator of all the illusions for the show, is the perfect person to profile Alex Ramon, with whom he has worked very closely on not only this show, but also "Disney Live: Mickey's Magic Show" several years ago.

We've had quite a bit of magic on TV in the USA lately, and Jamy Ian Swiss details the moment-by-moment experience of performing on The Late Show with Craig Ferguson, while Steve Cohen takes us behind the scenes for his preparations to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Richard Kaufman contributes his editor's comments in Genii Speaks.

Jon Racherbaumer discusses the latest appearances of magic in books and media in On the Slant.

Roberto Giobbi explains several "No-Deck Switches" in his wonderful Genii Session.

Al Cohen continues his Memoirs of a Magic Dealer.

Eugene Burger talks with the inimitable Max Maven in The Showmanship Interviews.

David Acer brings us a Magicana full of great tricks including a mystifying new coin plot by Yannick Lacroix.

David Oliver reviews tricks; Dustin Stinett reviews videos; and Jamy Ian Swiss reviews books.

Almost 100 pages of Genii every month: the best buy in magic.

And we've got a great offer for anyone who wants to subscribe or renew: the three-DVD set "Houdini The Movie Star" from Kino is now available from us for a limited time for 50% off the retail price of $40. YOU pay only $20, postpaid anywhere in the US. (Add $5 postage for Canada and $11 postage anywhere else in the world.) This 3 DVD set includes most of the surviving films and footage of Houdini and is only marked down to $36 on amazon.com, so our price is a whopping $15 less. We don't sell it separately: subscribe today or renew your existing subscription for one year and you can receive this extraordinary value.

Remember that the price of Genii drops from the $6 cover price to only $4.50 per issue when you subscribe for one year AND new subscribers get a free copy of the Harry Anderson/Jon Racherbaumer 32-page Jinx). Please visit the Genii website and subscribe today at www.geniimagazine.com.

Please take the time to try out Yannick Lacroix's Bermuda Triangle. It is a very easy complete routine with an ending that will leave at least one spectator speechless

We're setting everything up now and Bill Kalush is getting the balance of the issues of Genii scanned and uploaded and onto Ask Alexander. Then we have a few weeks of testing before we launch in late September or October. You'll receive an email.

Looking forward to it.

Hi, I may be wrong but I don't think Mr. Kaufman means for everyone who subscribes to Genii that they should post here that they received their monthly issue , otherwise this thread could have thousands of " I got mine " . If I'm wrong .... excuse me and I apologize in advance !

Great photography in that piece. Animal ciruses always tend to give me a bit of a frown but Mr. Steinmeyer's article peaked my interest.

Indeed, I do want to hear from as many subscribers as possible when the issue arrives and would also like to hear more detailed feedback about the contents. I'n happy to listen to negative as well as positive comments.

I neglected to mention in Genii Speaks that Jim Steinmeyer's "Conjuring" has a five month on, one month off, five month on, schedule (of his choosing). Fortunately the one month off allowed him to write our cover story.

Now busy finishing up the October issue and trying to figure out what the heck is going to be on the cover of November!

Early impression: Best issue this year for me!

Jamy's article illustrated how a real pro thinks through and assesses his performance--lots of stuff to take away from that. As Stan Allen is fond of saying, we need more honesty in magic and Jamy's analysis certainly fits that to a tee.

Max's interview was also enormously helpful, although I wish Eugene had probed more for specifics on how Max turned the 5,000. (BTW, does the plot of the card effect you described in Genii speaks belong to Max as well?)

Can't wait to get to Roberto's column!

Got mine the 18th in Orlando. A lot of high points this go round. Loved the Jamy Ian Swiss "play by play" report...it was a facinating read. Always happy when Al Cohen has some memories to share. The Steinmeyer and Burger pieces were top notch too. Man I haven't even got to the tricks yet. Great issue!!

I often do not find time to read Genii right after it arrives. It can easily be at least a month before I can get to it but I did want to see what Jamy Ian Swiss had to say about his spot on Craig's show.

Anyone who has done guest spots on television - especially live TV - will readily identify with the thoughts and unexpected problems that Jamy Swiss experienced. I could feel the controlled panic that sets in when confronted with such surprises. To survive takes quick thinking, many years of experience, and lots of confidence. I do thank Jamy for sharing this experience with the Genii readers.

I do not completely attribute the successful spot with Craig to mere luck. I can easily remember a much younger Jamy Ian Swiss performing (complete with hat) at The Magic Castle in the late 1960's. He was very skilled then and has only improved over the years and become quite the magic scholar as well as close-up performer. The many years of experience allowed the performance on Craig's show to run as smoothly as it did. Rather than pure luck, I would say it was a fortunate combination of time, situation, the man, and skill.

Jamy, thanks for sharing your thoughts. All of us who have practiced and anticipated anything that might go wrong can certainly identify with problems like the microphone cord. There are always the unanticipated little things waiting to bite you. You did well!

September issue arrived for me here in the UK this morning, looks great... sadly I didn't get my August issue, so have just e-mailed the office for a replacement.

Anyway off to dig into this issue, looking forward to reading Jamy's article.
