Richard,
Because they ignore board members. They only answer to the President of the board, and sometimes they don't. I have been told that only the secretary can post as the Academy of Magical Arts. 2 weeks ago Robert L. told me he didn't know who was posting on the Castle forum under that. But he said he was going to find out. Should be a very interesting board meeting this Tuesday.

Alan has that right.

OTH, until or if we fix this situation, I'm less inclined to accept Robert Lamoureux's answer to Alan as the truth.

(Including his MC Newsletter Editorial(s))

As an analogy on the Art of Delegation, one should not supply whiskey and car keys to teenagers, while expecting to suffer no consequences for doing so.

Such as loss of community trust and credibility.

Robert L is a smart man and saavy businessman.

I doubt highly he is not fully aware of the situation and owner of the anonymous post. I suspect the BoD must talk and agree prior to posting/discussing anything.

Having spent some time running a museum that had a board of directors the Executive Director and I quickly learned to ignore "orders" of individual board members as they could be quirky, arbitrary, and, more often than not, contradictory.

What we did respond to were resolutions debated and voted on by the board and/or directives that came from the Executive Committee. The board learned that they, as individuals, couldn't come in and start giving orders to staff or anyone. Suggestions, constructive criticism, and incisive observations were always welcome.

Well, this one's for rent, not for sale, and would probably need some expansion; however, the "look" is a start & it's only 12 miles away so a much closer move. ;)

Why would anyone pay $4250/month to rent a 2700 square foot house when you could get a 700 square foot bachelor studio w/Murphy Bed in Hollywood for only $500 more a month?

Now I find out it was Robert L., that gave his approval for this without a BOD vote. ( The posting on the Castle forum under AMA Inc.)

Thanks for the link Doc. I think you will all agree its a splendid looking castle.
200 founding members at $1000 each, that covers their membership for life. And a few renovations of course.

No question, its a nice looking building in a beautiful area. But the Magic Castle in Ely (pronounced ee-lee), Minnesota?

Average spring temperature (Fahrenheit): 40
Average summer temperature: 64
Average fall temperature: 43
Average winter temperature: 8 (with 10 inches of snow)

Closest major airport: Duluth (115 miles) [Ely has a municipal airport if you want to charter a plane.]

Good luck finding 2 founding members let alone 200.

Of course, the upside is that the downtown traffic there compared to Los Angeles will be a breeze!

The Magic Castle has never been able to duplicate itself anywhere else, despite much effort. Other attempts to open magic clubs of any type have met with varying degrees of success, but in most places they are simply restaurants of various types that have some magic in them.

There is a paradox at the center of any effort to open a Magic Castle: First, it has to be in a major metropolitan area with a lot of wealthy people. Second, any of the areas that meet that criteria are too expensive for the Magic Castle to operate in a cost efficient manner. The only reason the Magic Castle exists in Los Angeles is because of Tom Glover, Sr. He gave Bill and Milt and incredible deal and that business model is very hard to maintain now, and impossible to create anywhere else.

Very nice. But a Motel 6 when compared to the Hearst Castle (but I am completely biased in this regard).

I don't have a "flicker" account, but posting an photo anywhere on the internet and calling it "private" seems like fodder for a SNL sketch to me. There doesn't seem to be anything that is private on the net.

While sites like facebook enjoy playing fast and loose with users' privacy, flickr is actually very serious about it.

If you set a flickr picture to private, no one can see it. (caveat - unless they hack your account etc etc)

Bottom line is the magic castle and sushi bar picture is unavailable to be viewed, so the point doc was trying to make is lost.

Milt asked us to drop it, as reported earlier in the thread. Other items have come to a head due to the censorship and that is on going. More news in a month.

A member criticized the management recently. He was sent an email saying that this was libel, and slander, and that legal action would be taken in the future. I will get the details about this soon. This does not upset me because these people will be out of a job in about 16 months. California is a right to work state. You can be fired without getting a reason. Also remember these people do not have a contract, they can be let go at anytime. The list of people that want to run for the B.O.D, to fire these people is growing. They are high profile members that have a GREAT chance of being elected. So I can wait for 16 months. It will pass like a flash.

Alan, isn't a threat of legal action which is not followed by the action itself an actionable offense?

Jonathan,
I do not know the answer to that. It is just a bunch of BULL that you can't say you do not like the job that management is doing. Maybe you can get censored on the Castle forums for saying it. But not here. I do not like the job that management of the Castle is doing. We were told that the Cabarets were only going to be on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Now they are also on Wednesday, and Thursday. They even advertise the Cabarets on the back of the dinner tickets to the Palace shows. It is my understanding that they did this without B.O.D. approval. They were told to stop doing it, but that was ignored. B.O.D. members have asked to see figures, that hasn't happened yet. The AMA has members that are lawyers who have offered their services pro bono, but we keep paying tremendous legal fees. So I will say it again the next election will have a B.O.D. that will be removing these people.

Terry,
On Friday you stated that you were going to "make things right" with Dave.
Your recent post on the Forums in which you name him (one of our employees) personally in connection with revisions to the Standing Rules, is not the way to go about that goal.
You also make a veiled reference to "his accomplice" if you mean "me" please, send me an email in which you state that was your intention. And by all means, use my name in the future so that there will be no mistake, if things need to be sorted out.
Terry, this is an unmitigated attack on an employee of the AMA.
You were insulting to him with the "AKA AMA" remark and to whomever you are referring to as the "accomplice".
I am surprised and very disappointed.

What expectation of privacy is there in an unencrypted communication? That's part of why we have PGP and HTTPS.

For example, did you know that some phone carriers leave text messages unencrypted and searchable via google?

Actually, that is not exactly correct.

The recipient of e-mail is generally free to share the information in the e-mail with anyone. Disclosure of contents of e-mail by the recipient is not a crime, unless there were disclosure of classified material or if the recipient has some duty of legal confidentiality (e.g., physician-patient, attorney-clien), the recipient is free to share the information with anyone. However, under some circumstances, the sender might sue the recipient for publicity given to private life, under Restatement (Second) Torts 652D (1977) Because the expression in most e-mail is not valuable [There is no copyright protection for either ideas or information. 17 U.S.C. 102(b)], and therefore copyright law gives little protection to typical e-mail.

It may be discourteous or unethical, but not necessarily illegal.
