Criss Angel's River Stunt w/ Surprising Images

Postby Magic Newswire » May 10th, 2010, 6:28 pm

Just found this at the Pheonix New Times

One spectator reported: "I'm glad we didn't come down here at 9 or 10 a.m. just for that," said one woman after the stunt. "It was not worth it and we're still complaining. (We) couldn't see anything."

The writer seems to have made up his mind in advance: "Criss Angel, the over-dramatic, often-shirtless "magician" and star of A&E's Criss Angel Mindfreak, performed a "death-defying" stunt in Lake Havasu on Saturday, and, as we predicted last week, nothing too cool happened and Angel's still alive -- despite ruthlessly pimping the danger element of the stunt."

Clearly she has seen the TV show. And given that, I think it's ok for her to have expectations. It just turns out that she happens to be smarter than your average, semi-depressed 14 year old (or pre-menopausal woman with bad boy issues) and realizes there is an editing bay behind that curtain.

Just did a gig in Vegas. Asked two cabbies about their show recommendations. Both made fun of Criss Angel. Met another person (bartender in austin) who had seen the show. He (a non-magician) deconstructed pretty much all of the illusions.

What would be a death-defying" stunt if Criss ( I'm not much of an angel ) would jump in the river with a bar of soap. He would look much more cleaner and clean up his act at the same time..
Sorry about editing my post but you have to edit when it comes to Criss Angel.

Excuse me if I missed something, but from what I read, Criss performed this exactly as it should be performed. He "hyped" it properly (it sounds like), he created some urgency as the crowd gathered early. He showed up late (very theatrical)and successfully escaped while underwater.

What you're missing is that the people who gathered to watch were kept waiting a hugely long time and were then disappointed with what they saw (or couldn't see).

I believe audiences have changed. In this case, I blame the stunt, not the way it was performed. I'll bet Houdini made 'em wait...

Worked recently with an agent who did an event with Criss. The owners of the venue wanted him to introduce the new management. All he had to do was come out and say one name. He screwed it up.

He had it written on his hand.

And he still screwed it up.
