I'm sure you'll have no problem convincing them exactly how important your dad was to the history of magic.

For those of us who don't know, could someone please explain the difference between the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees?

Thanks

Gord

Sure, Gord. The AMA Board of Directors handles the business and financial side of the AMA operations, including the hiring of management personnel. The AMA Board of Trustees is charged with the creative, artistic and educational side of the AMA operations, including the award selection, the Castle Library, lectures and magic classes. Occasionally the responsibilities overlap, as when the Director of Entertainment resigned and the Trustees interviewed candidates for his replacement, finally (per the BOD's instructions) providing three capable candidates for the job and making our recommendation.

Best always,
Best,

Mark

That's just wrong, Richard.

However, btw, General Grant did (and occasionally still does) a beautifully slow and deliberate dove act, with colored (dyed) doves, that he has been doing for almost 50 years. For those who don't know him, he is not the U.F. "Gen" Grant of magic props building fame. General Grant (yes, it's his real, given name), is a Massachusetts native, whose act known as "Sophisticated Sorcery" played clubs, conventions and events around the country for decades, even though magic wasn't his full-time occupation. His slow-motion dove steals and productions, his "surprise" ending, and his one-handed dove-to-silk-toss are true classics. He had, and is, a class act.

Back on topic.... Congrats to the new board!

Sure he did, David. I saw it at least twice--and then he produced the two ducks. The first time I saw it was when Adam Fleischer hired him for one of the New York Magic Symposiums.

Richard, I wasn't disputing the fact that Frank used birds of color... it was the way you phrased it, that could have been better...

Ah... puns... When I was little, my mom used to charge me 10 cents every time I used a pun. She called it, "Once a pun, a dime." Yup, figured it out all by myself...

Think of the folks who view this page via an online translator into their native Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, German...

Idomatic quickly loses a few letters in translation - why rush it?

When did your Dad start using colored birds? Del Edwards was using them in 1951.

Ed Reno has a trick with dyed doves in the May 1945 Sphinx, and Jean Hugard features a colored dove production in the Apr 1947 Hugard's Magic Monthly, describing how to color the birds with aniline dyes.

Its a little fuzzy as far as who could have been
the first magician to use to colored doves.

According to Frances Marshall said it was possibly
Al Wheatley.

She states:
"References have been made in other books to "long ago" appearances of colored doves, we think Al was one of the first...
although he is currently using white birds."

still non-specific.

But my dad got an idea as to the way to
produce doves from Cantu.

The facts that I know is that my dad performed
with yellow doves after he formed his own show
after he was discharged from army. Making him
around the age of 20/21.

Figured out a way to dye them safely.
He performed using them once maybe
twice then, he sold the formula to
Ron Urban for $25.

It was really Ron Urban who perfected the
color dove formula and it was certified
by many animal safety associations and he
toured around the world with his coloured
dove. act.

If anything my father saw an idea from an
animal act that used color pigeons.

He also stated it was Ed Reno (at least I think
it was what he said) that gave him some
doves he had.

he ended up using chinese chickens by accident
mainly because he couldn't stand the doves cooing.

he also previously used a rabbit at one time but
the poor thing went stir crazy in the catch it
bounced up and down and died.

(( made a correction from Cantu to Al Wheatley above
with quote. ))
