Brad,

I'm not sure if you are the person who put that line up together or not, but you Austin guys pu together one hell of a line up. Kudos to the Austin crew.

Over the last year or so, I thought the only time I was ever going to see DeCamps in Texas was if he was booked at a convention :)

I can't wait. We missed you down in Houston though Brad.

We, in Texas, forget that not everyone knows that our TAOM convention (Texas Association of Magicians) is always held on the Labor Day weekend of each year. This year, that will fall on Sept. 3 - 6, 2010. You can find this on the first page of the new web site, www.taom2010.com

It is a toss-up for me whether the TAOM or Magic LIVE! is the best magic convention on earth. Each is great for different reasons. That said, Austin is an awesome city with an awesome host club of people who know hospitality. The talent line-up is amazing, and the hotel is terrific.

Might I suggest registering today, book your hotel now and should plans change, cancel if needed. However, if you want a convention where you can learn from you peers, truly network with one another and see and learn some incredible magic from our very best in our industry... you'll certainly want to be there.

Wow that is a stellar line-up. Austin 2010 TAOM should be the convention to go to.
To get all the talent in one venue and it is not a National (IBM - SanDiego 2010, SAM - Atlanta 2010) convention this is a treat.

It would be very wise to register early for Austin's TAOM 2010.

There were about 700 folks at Houston (TAOM 2009), and we are cutting off registrations for Austin at 500. Why, you ask? Because some of our shows will be in the Austin City Limits studio, a fantastic venue, and we do not want to be overly crowded.

Check out the links to TAOM 2010 and REGISTER EARLY!!!

Yes, the past four years TAOM has topped out in attendance at about 500 (one year barely breaking 100). Given access to the amazing facility that is Austin City Limits, and the commitment to present artists in as close to an ideal setting as is possible to create at a magic convention it was decided to limit seats to 500. Austin has some special surprises in store and a team of organizers committed to making this a stellar magic experience for everyone. My role in the process has been minimal.

But Opie is right. Seats right now are $165 and after 10.31 they go up I think to $195. So, if you are thinking of going, I would register now.

interviews form this years TAOM?

One of the things that makes TAOM a little different is that it essentially goes "under new management" every year.

Kind of like SEAM.

Yes.. Ken Scott was kind enough to connect with a number of people there at TAOM 2009. I'll be doing a wrap-up with him today and will have it online asap.

I'll probably have our interview with Barrie Richardson online tonight.

Can someone who knows tell us more about the schedule? I know it runs from Sept 3-6, but how early on the 3rd and how late on the 6th. I would like to get by on as few hotel nights as possible without missing anything. Thanks.

It is very early to discuss scheduling, though there is a tentative one in place. The first show of the event will be Friday evening, probably around 9 in order to allow people to make it in in time. Traditionally there is an afternoon lecture. Monday will be a lecture from one of our feature performers. So, I would try to arrive by 6pm on Friday with a noon departure Monday.

RK,

No idea how that happened. I am not affiliated with the TAOM other than as an adviser/liaison for the talent. I began putting together this line up starting last December. There are a few names we have not announced - which will only make both events even more similar.

My suspicion is that - in thinking about what talent people would like to see, talent that isn't over exposed with 16 DVDs on the market, talent that can not only educate, but entertain - the producers of magiccon came up with the same handful of names as I did.

Brad,
I think you nailed it when you mentioned about DVD overexposure and "talent that can not only educate, but entertain." So excited about going next year. Due to my race schedule, I have not attended in 3 years. Vowed to rework the race schedule to meet TAOM schedule due to the line up.

Just in:

The convention has already SOLD OUT over half of the registrations and it is still a year away. Even still, they are working on a couple more surprises to add to the line up in addition to the one's yet to be announced.

Registration increases on 10/31.

Now is a great chance to sign up for an amazing convention at a bargain price.

While you're down there, make a reservation to see "Esther's Follies", with Ray Anderson (the best magician you've probably never heard of). Magic makes up about 50% of the show, with the non-magic half being devoted to songs and comedy skits (ala SNL--back when SNL was funny.) You can read about the show here:
http://www.esthersfollies.com/

I can't speak highly enough about Anderson's magic. If you want to see a true master of the platform show (and what a platform!) you must check this show out. You'll thank me, I'm sure of it.

Oh, and by the way, I have absolutely no connection to Esther's Follies or Ray Anderson, other than being a devoted fan and ex-Austinite. There are few things I miss about Austin (the heat not being one of them), and Esther's is #1 on the list.

Make reservations and SEE THE SHOW!

Thanks Richard....and here is the big announcement, as provided
by Kent Cummins, our prime coordinator with Austin entertainments:

The Austin magic community is sponsoring the first-ever "Texas Street Magic Festival" on Thursday, September 2, 2010, the day before the Texas Association of Magicians (TAOM) convention in Austin.

The event is designed to allow the Austin community as a whole to
experience magic and the allied variety arts on 6th Street, Austin's popular entertainment district.

There will be live music, magic, juggling, unicycles, fire eating, puppetry, ventriloquism, clowning, balloon twisting, and other entertainers starting before dusk and performing late into the night.

Of course there will also be ample food and drink, plus selected craft vendors...and the world-famous magic and comedy of Esther's Follies!

The event is planned to allow Austin's non-magicians to experience the
magic that will permeate the city during Labor Day weekend in 2010.

Kent Cummins, Executive Director
The Kent Cummins Magic Camp

So, folks....You gotta come early, and you really need to register NOW.... http://www.taom2010.com -

Whoops! I have asked Kent to forgive my misspelling of his name in the introduction to the previous post....RK, can you help with a deletion of the g in Kent's last name? What happened to the "Edit" button?

As strange as it may seem, both Mark Lewis and I occasionally make an error....Hey, wouldn't it be something if we could get Mark Lewis to come to Austin next Labor Day and tutor us on his mouse and Svengali presentations? Hey, no pay, Mark; just friendly sharing....tsk tsk...
