I like the metaphor of one's ears perking up like a rabbit hearing about a new cabbage patch. Jack writes quite well, indeed - and perhaps if I study his writing more, I will make a better showing in the next writing contest, as my 2-3 weeks worth of effort came to naught in the recent one.

Jack, you are anything but an idiot. Unintentional oversights happen all the time. (I have a dang good track record of them myself!)
