Pricey Magic?

Postby JHostler » August 22nd, 2020, 2:56 pm

Not long before COVID-19 upended planet earth, there was much grousing concerning the steady stream of huge, "over-priced" books hitting the magic market. So I had some fun with an inflation calculator this afternoon...

• Nemo 500 & Kaps wallets from Joe Stevens - $75 each in 1983 ($198 in 2020 dollars)
• Bertram on Sleight of Hand - $80 in 1984 ($203 in 2020 dollars)
• David Roth’s Expert Coin Magic - $73pp in 1985 ($179 in 2020 dollars)
• At the Table by Jon Racherbaumer - $32pp in 1985 ($78 in 2020 dollars)
• The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings - $40 in 1986 ($96 in 2020 dollars)
• Harry Lorayne - Tannen’s Stars of Magic VHS - $69.50 in 1987 ($160 in 2020 dollars)

While the crap/treasure ratio probably beats decades past, what we're shelling out for the good stuff really doesn't seem out of line.

YMMV...

You are paying less than the adjusted amount because people would not pay the adjusted amount.
