Index to Genii

Postby paulsunday » September 4th, 2018, 9:37 am

Is there (1) A plain old text list of each issue of Genii and who was on the cover? and/or (2) A PDF file or web site with all of the covers and/or (3) A PDF index or web site index of all of the content.

Thanks.

Someone started one online, but then the site vanished.

Over at lybrary.com - you can see an index for each volume of GENII magazine.

For example - here is the first volume:

https://www.lybrary.com/genii-volume-01-p-461190.html

One of the great things about Chris Washuber's site is that he provides comprehensive indexes for every book and magazine he sells. I am often finding stuff buried away in obscure old magic magazines thanks to this. His website details the full table of contents to the entire run of a number of different magic magazines. Along with all the books he sells. It is a tremendous resource.

Great information. Thanks very much everybody.

(Should be a way to automate this. Maybe when I retire.)

While Chris's indexes of Genii Magazine are a fantastic resource, I find it difficult to import them to a database. It's one thing to have each issue index taken directly from the magazine, but it's another story to build a database with that information. For instance, aspects such as duplicate names, alias or artistic names, errors in the original index pages et cetera, have to be checked and dealt with. As an aside note, please imagine how much time has Denis Behr invested building and maintaining his conjuring archive.

In the case of Genii Magazine, the problem is even bigger, since the magazine and its structure have gone through many changes over the years, making it quite challenging to build a comprehensive database. It can be done, but some decisions about the codifying of the information should be carefully considered. (I don't consider myself to be in a position to do that on my own).

That's the main reason the above site indexes only the Kaufman-era magazines. Adding the previous Genii issues to that database, even with the help of Chris's indexes, has been a nightmare so far.

Should you have some thoughts about that automation, in order to expand the current database at http://genii.somee.com/, I'll be more than glad to hearing from you!
