Theodore Deland

Hey Richard,

I just saw a lightning calculation effect (using a square of numbers and a match) by Theo in 'The New Pentagram'. Just want to mention it in case you are not aware of the effect?

Can't wait for the book. I am dying to learn more about his life and his magic.

Since DeLand died in 1931, I doubt he contributed it to The New Pentragram. It was just reprinted.

DeLand is done. Trying to scratch up enough cash to have it laid out (it's a big book 800 to 900 pages) and it needs to be printed in color.

Two other books will likely come out first.

Now that GENII has a new owner - do you think that will help you produce more books in future?

Yes, it probably will.

Richard?

Are you going to discuss The Floating Skeleton in the book?

It looks like a wonderful idea. Like something Lubor Fiedler would come up with.

Everything DeLand ever published is in the book.

Is the plan to have this book out this year? Maybe an xmas release?

I think a great feature for a deluxe edition would be an inclusion of the custom gaffed cards needed for the performance of the tricks described. I know I would pay extra for that.

Brad, the inclusion of the cards is already a done deal.

For me (and many others I suspect), the Deland book ranks up there with Tenyoism for a must have and the sooner the better.

Deland's Phantom Card trick (made by SS Adams) was the first card trick I ever owned. The enjoyment I derived from it is incalculable! In fact, I have one in that cool illustrated envelope hanging up on the wall.

As well, the Deland deck was my first trick deck and still my all-time favorite! A work of genius in both design and diversity.

Nowadays, I prefer history magic books rather than those teaching tricks (Deland's tricks being an exception) so I am very excited about this upcoming release! Deland was a strange and interesting character so this should be a great read.

I am also looking forward to the updated cards included within! The more of them, the better!

Lots of history in the DeLand book. You will enjoy it.

Any ideas for the release date?

Was hoping for late this year, but there's just no way because of the labor to lay it out, plus the printing in China (two months) and another month on the boat. Let assume it's August 1 today, add three months for printing and shipping, and it becomes November 1--that's before the layout which will easily require several months of work.

I was just thinking (uh oh!), this may be 200 pages more than Tenyoism. So Richard, are you considering three volumes rather than two? Do you intend to provide hernia insurance? Are you trying to get the USPS to hate you?

Do all the books come with special cards, or just the collector's edition?

All the books will come with a full deck of 54 gimmicked cards.
There will not be a deluxe edition. I am planning something unique!

This is one of the most interesting and magical books I have ever had a hand in.

Deland was a genius, albeit a troubled one.

That's an understatement!

There are a number of reasons I am looking forward to this book. But one of them is to learn more about an area of card magic I have always overlooked.

Gimmicked decks.

With that in mind - I recently read about 'The Trilby Deck' by Joe Stuthard. It is a combination of a Svengali and a Stripper deck. Quite a neat combination. Big Blind Media re-released it a couple of years ago and it seems like it is worth checking out for those looking for some novel thinking in the world of gimmicked decks.

Just something to keep you busy until the Theodore Deland book comes out.

Any updates on this, Richard?

I wonder if it was the manuscript you held in your hands recently on the digital GENII Speaks supplement?

I am very much looking forward to the Deland book!

In fact, Richard, please place my name on the deluxe, limited, special, or early bird edition of the book. I don't want to miss out on whatever you are going to offer!

There will be no deluxe edition because DeLand has been dead since 1931 and isn't here to sign it.

But, there will be something of which I believe there will only be 100. It won't be inexpensive because it's going to cost a lot to make, however it will be something unique. About it I can say no more.

For those of you whom, like me, are looking forward to Richard's book on Deland, you may want to take a peek at this blog posting which features several interesting items produced by Deland with some of the context of those items:

Your assumptions about the designs of the other two cards are incorrect.

I find the idea of selling a printing block for DIY card printing fascinating.

I just came across a remarkable rising card effect by Deland. Exactly the sort of thing you would expect to see to see from Lubor Fiedler.

A principle not used before in magic. Although I don't think the materials will be easy to find. And as such - not many people will ever perform it.

Still it whetted my appetite even more for the new Deland book.

Any updates on this, Richard???

Apparently the slow boat from China takes 3 months.

So maybe four months from now is a good estimate?

Middle of September?

Perhaps $150 to $200.

I will likely only print one time (like Tenyoism) because of the cost and having to print it in China. Also, because of having the decks printed, there are minimums.

For those of us who'd like to buy more than one, in order to future-proof the tricks from wear and tear, will you be printing extra decks?

I believe each book will come with two identical decks.
There are certain gimmicks I cannot print because USPC won't let me print an altered Rider Back.

You do have other options if you want to include a complete set of gimmicks, which would be nice since this publication is a once in a lifetime thing. Phoenix or mandolin backs strike me as viable options.
