Great Fred Kaps Video in Genii Speaks

Postby erdnasephile » March 7th, 2016, 4:27 pm

The Fred Kaps video in the digital edition of this month's Genii (The Lost Stars of Magic issue) is superb.

Strong sleight of hand and a wonderful personality--he seems like a guy that would have been exceedingly pleasant to know.

I dearly wish a "big book" about Fred Kaps, his thinking, and his magic would be published before I die!

It's a long long story. If it would have happened, Mike Caveney was to have been the publisher. Plans were made, but life gets in the way (not on Mike's part).

The book was planned shortly after his death. It could still be done today.

Pete Biro once said that Mr. Kaps kept extensive notebooks regarding his magic in English. I wish whoever has them would consider teaming up with a professional writer to get a book out so this valuable material won't be lost forever.

From a number of people who knew Fred Kaps well, I've been told that while he could show you how a trick was done, he wasn't able to explain the thinking and nuances that turned it into magic.

That would be the author's job, Quentin. To take what Kaps did, and by watching it repeatedly, suss out the subtext.

Book not needed.

Needed: DVD of every Kaps performance available, w/state of the art audio & image quality enhancement. Then leave it up to the viewers to determine subtext or whatever.

(Desperately hoping there's footage available beyond what was on "Seeing is Believing".)

I understand if it's too time consuming to write a post about, but what exactly are the obstacles here that is hindering a book being written?
