May Genii in the mail!

The May Genii, a bulging issue on Karl Germain, went in the mail last Friday, April 12. Sound off when you get yours and let me know what you think of the article on Germain, which takes most of the issue (though there are five tricks--no, not all cards, in there too!). :)

The issue arrived yesterday, and as I am home with some weird flu, it was a welcome diversion and I had the opporunity of reading it through. The Germain section, as readers will discover, is visually rich as well as verbally. I particularly enjoyed Torkova's writing and hope to see more of him in Genii. As to the tricks, despite the carefully described misdirection, I'd challenge either Germain or David Ben to secretly use both hands to write a fake autograph in their lap without some frank specator saying, "Whatcha doing there? Playing with yourself?" I just can't imagine that flying in fast or even moderately moving company. Otherwise a great section and I wish the authors would have tipped Germain's spirit cabinet method (we have to await the impending book). Ah, but so much more in this issue. Giobbi's column is excellent this month, and Gordon Bean's has me salivating over the arrival of The Penumbra. The reviewers are in top form, and I especially enjoyed Jamy's accurate and funny words for his partner in insanity, Michael Close. All this plus a really cool patter presentation from Max and intriguing new ads from Stephen Minch and John Kennedy.

Steve -- first, I hope next time you get a normal flu. It is so much better than the weird kind.
Second, James Randi tells a story about duplicating a hidden drawing by rubbing a pad against a pen poking out of his lap, on a TV show no less, to show that he could replicate a psychic's ability. I haven't seen the Germain article (or the Randi tv show), but if Randi can get away with that, I guess I'd believe Germain could get away with something similar.

Hi,
Received in Phila., Pa on 4/18. I briefly thumbed through, but, I must say one word. WOW!
The layout is beautiful. You are really doing an excellent job with how the pages look. Very pleasing to the eye. It's a shame that I can't leave it lying around so that my non-magician friends could see how well it is made.
If you keep this up, we will all become spoiled rotten.

My issue is here, and it is beautiful. Stuart Cramer is certainly the hero of the tale, but the full story contains an unsung heroine who I see was marginalized to the point of invisibility.

But what a treasure trove. My favorite is the "sketch drawn by young Germain in the fly leaf of a book he owned." It is so colorful and pleasing, and the prominent display of the Ace of Hearts has a wonderful private meaning for me. Here's why:

My husband and I went to hear a local band called Drift a number of times over the course of a year or so. The singer had a gorgeous voice, and the lyrics were most interesting. One of the songs contained the line: "The cards you deal to the table - I've lost the Ace."

One night I noticed this singer at the bar of the club where they played, and I approached him. He was just turning away from the bar, with a bottle of beer in each hand. I produced the Ace of Hearts, and extended it to him. He reeled back, stunned, placed the bottles of beer back on the bar, and then took the card into his hand.

I said "I just want you to know that somebody's paying attention."

He said "And it's definitely you, sweetheart."

He kept the card, and the next time we saw them he sang "The cards you deal to the table - I've got the Ace."

And there it is, off the pen of young Mattmueller.

I agree, Lisa's post made me go back and pay closer attention to the illustrations. A fascinating piece on Germain.

I'm in Vienna, VA (about 15 miles from the Genii offices), and I received my issue two days ago (April 20). I was a bit surprised it was so (relatively) late in the month, and I was chagrined to see it in both Al's Magic and Barry's Magic before I got home to check my mail on Saturday.

Oh, PS--I also got my renewal notice, so I'm going to re-up for another couple years as soon as I post this. I'm so proud to live a mere subway ride and local phone call away from Genii!

No smudges or assembly problems so far.

I really don't worry about when MY "printed" copy of the Genii arrives... I just "hack" into the printing companies database and read the electronic files BEFORE Richard K even sees his blue line...

Who do you think deleted the two missing lines from the April issue?

My end of Southern California (on the good side of the “Orange Curtain”) checking in. I haven't been able to spend a lot of time with it yet, but there are no smudges on the cover thus far – and I have pretty soggy paws.

I got mine yesterday. Great issue! I've said before, I'm a huge fan of the Victorian and classical magic, and this was like heaven (ok, maybe not that good!).
I get other magazines as well as this one, some of them not even magic (say it isn't so!). I have to say this is the one I sit at the mailbox waiting for every month!

Received my issue in beautiful downtown San Jose Ca. yesterday, unfortunately our marvelous U.S. Postal service chose to perform a "Lets see how much abuse we can give this magazine" test on my issue, but I will survive until the nexy issue, but sure like to have pristine copies.

Thanks, Richard. Karl Germain has always been one of my "magic heros". Not only was he original in his methods, effects, and presentations; but very aware of what created good magic, mystery, and entertainment. The article in this months issue is extremely interesting to me. I must point out that this is an expensive article, though. Now I'll HAVE to buy a copy of "Germain The Wizard"! I suppose I should put a rug down in my shop, too - for class :)
