Postby Richard Kaufman » June 10th, 2005, 10:48 am

I'd like to hear from as many of you as possible with an estimate of how long you spend each month reading Genii, MAGIC, Linking Ring, MUM, and The Magic Circular. Please vote in the poll and post additional comments below if you'd like. Even if you read no magazine other than Genii, please tell us how you time you spend each month.
Many thanks in advance for taking part!

Could really use an additional time increment for some of the magazines...

like 30 minutes or less...

Hello Richard,

In round numbers, I suspect that I spend two hours each month reading Genii and two hours reading Magic. I spend about 40 minutes each on MUM and the Linking Ring.

Best regards, Jeff

The problem with M.U.M. (at least for me) is I'd have to actually remove it from the polybag, which I haven't done in...well, a long time.

I hope that changes soon, though.

Noah, yes, put 0 for magazines you do not receive. If you receive the magazine, but do not spend any time reading it and wish to publically say so here on the Forum, you are welcome to do that.

I spend about 3 hours going through Genii. It's the only magazine I subscribe to. I'll occasionally pick up a copy of MAGIC, but that's generally only when someone's mentioned that there is and item worth reading in it. I don't belong to IBM, SAM, or the Magic Circle, so I don't receive any of the other magazines.

It really depends on the issue. I scan and then pick articles to read when I have time. I can get MUM down in less than 10 minutes. The Linking Ring in about 30 depending on content. I read through both magic and genii in about an hour. Sometimes more if the feature article is of real interest.

30 minutes for the Linking Ring? Geez, Brad, you must be a speed reader or something. It takes me 8 hours just to get through the ring reports...

There is sometimes very good material in the Linking Ring. But I find the ring reports in both LR and MUM pretty much a waste of space. But that's just me. I know some people really like them. I find them too inconsistent with quality and accurate info to be useful.

Thank you, Harry Potter, it's nice to know you can read 60 to 70 pages (number of non-ad pages in Genii) in ten seconds. Now go back to sleep.

Genii is the only magazine I get now, and because of my situation I have to read it in lots of little chunks, so it's hard to say how long it takes altogether. I do always read it from cover to cover though as a matter of principle, even the articles which are of less interest (OK, maybe not all the adverts).

It seems that for a few more years we will be subject to the cheapness of Wilmarth. Once his presidency is over I'm sure someone will introduce the idea that we are not out to publish the Linking Ring on the cheap and they will come up to date with a larger format, coated stock, like they used to and will try to approach Genii's quality.

The trim size of the Linking Ring is still small due to Phil Willmarth's decision that it is a journal rather than a magazine. He has been resistant to changing the size, adding color, improving the paper, etc.

(NOTE: I have edited my original post because of additional information provided to me in the interim.)

I couldn't care less about the trim size and paper quality, it's all about the content. If the LR were glossy and magazine-sized, I can't really imagine it being "better" simply because of the physical change.

"dreck assortus apcray"

Is this a new language? The first word is Yiddish, the second word is faux latin, the third word Pig Latin.

Richard--

As a follow up, you (and columnists and advertisers) may find it incrementally useful to know where readers turn first and time spent by column or section.

This is how I estimated my reading time, e.g., turn to reviews, then Max Maven, then Genii Speaks, then essays (Racherbaumer, Giobbi, Burger, etc.); come back another time for longer articles (usually once per sitting); and finally Magicana and other tricks spriknled throughout.

Just a thought.

Hi Richard,

I just voted.

What is the purpose of this survey? I hope you won't cut down the page content if you judge that we spend too much time reading the magazine. If anything I want more... more...

You need a button for 'as long as it takes'. I couldn't vote as none of the answers fit.

Take care, Ian
