I don't remember an official video being released based on HBO's special of Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants.
There is a couple of auctions on EBay that are selling VHS copies of the show.

I was wondering about those auctions as well. I e-mailed one seller and this is what I was told:
"...I do not think it is professionally marketed. It is a promotional copy sold to media and magic dealers. There is no cover or anything like that. It was not taped off TV."
Perhaps some of the dealers out there can confirm this.

It is possible a few promotional copies were made, however the idea that more than one or two of these would find their way onto eBay is suspicious. Besides, how would one tall a promotional copy from one taped off the TV? While there is usually a big word like "Promo Copy" or a Time Code on the screen, would any of the buyers complain if that wasn't there?
Most likely these are copies taped from TV and being sold.

HBO does indeed send out promotional copies of their shows to many media groups and reviewers. I have seen many of these in used video stores and in used book stores. HBO's promotion tapes are in boxes printed "For Your Consideration...."

HBO sends promotional copies of just about every HBO show that is eligible for an award to just about everyone eligible to vote on that award.
In other words, there are more than just a few.
