Frequency of Posters?

Postby Edward » January 18th, 2006, 1:16 pm

Why hasn't this site recieved the same amount of Visits and memberships of other forums? It seems to me that this forum has a lot to offer.

Quality over quantity. You won't see, thank goodness, 179 posts about what back color of cards people like. This board also has a higher percentage of top notch talent and collectors than most other boards. They tend to post about thing truely of interest rather than agreeing with 435 other posters in a thread about 'where to find loops cheap'.

There are some boards like The Magic Cafe or Magic Bunny where you will get thousands of posts of people talking absolute rubbish about ludicrous methods for tricks shown on TV specials. Or Sven decks.

It's usually teenagers, it's usually rubbish.

This forum, while not as 'busy' has professional magicians and outstandingly well thought of amateurs posting insightful, well thought out posts helping each other - and sometimes just shooting the breeze.

You pays your money you takes your choice.

Enjoy the pearls that you will find here.

Im very happy to read these comments: I thought that I just scared everybody away, being the heavy-handed, anti-free speech, right-wing reactionary, socialist, atheist, religious zealot, politically correct, cupcake-eating a**hole that I am.

It's interesting, that most of those professional magicians and outstandingly well thought of amateurs posting insightful, also post at places like the Magic Cafe.
So your explanation re *why* so few post here doesn't exactly fit ??

One reason is that the delicate art of moderation is enforced here by Dustin and Richard, and self moderated the rest of the time by the posters.

Edward: Yes this forum has a lot to offer for the serious-minded and knowledgable magicians. Most of the other forums are loaded with dopey questions, mostly by people asking HOW IS XXX DONE... or I just saw Cyril do xxx and I want to know how he did it. :whack:
Stay tooned.

I'm truly sorry if you think my post was a troll. I posted to sincerely get a response to my question. I do think that this is a great site but was curious as to why it is not as busy. I thank all of you who posted an answer to my question.

And yes I am a newbie to THIS forum. Although I have posted on other forums and I'm not new there.

Edward:

First off, welcome to the Genii Forum. You will find that although the level of discourse is considerably higher than at other forums, there are exceptions.

The primary reason that there is less traffic here than at other boards is that a considerable amount of the traffic on other boards is not allowed here. Discussing (and sometimes illegally duplicating and sharing) the methods of current marketed tricks, for example. Flaming and name calling. Endless rambling arguments that veer wildly off topic. All these are squelched here. As a result, there's less traffic.

I haven't been to the Magic Cafe, but my impression is that, although there are a number of "name" magicians who post there, few visit regularly. I know a few who have been guest hosts (or whatever it's called) for a week, and answered a group of questions, but don't visit regularly.

It can be difficult for novice magicians to get lots of value from the Genii Forum, precisely because so many of the members here are very experienced, and are less willing and/or able to spend time on novice-level questions.

If I may offer a suggestion, when you ask a question, take some time to write it carefully. The more you can distinguish yourself from the large numbers of newbies who are only interested in trading bootlegged DVDs, the more useful will be the responses you receive. It takes a little extra time, but it's worth it. I firmly believe that the Genii forum is the single greatest resource in magic today. There is no other online community that can approach the depth and breadth of this one.

I feel the main reason is that there are lots of posts on the Magic Cafe that wouldn't get far on the Genii forum. These fall mostly in the category of product discussions where the latest product on Hocus Pocus is analyzed and sometimes the method is revealed indirectly. For example, the levitation Icarus has over 40 pages (maybe 1000 posts) on the Magic Cafe where it's compared to many other levitations and the method is almost close to being revealed. On Genii, there are maybe 10 to 20 posts on Icarus. Why is this? I suspect it has to do with the Genii posters being a little more conservative and not wanting to get into a discussion of methods. Also a discussion of methods on the Genii forum will generally be cause for closing the thread. I am not knocking the Cafe, it's just a different set of rules for posting.

Also there is a lot of flameing(sp?)permitted on the Magic Cafe that generally will be "thread closed" on the Genii forum. Hope this helps

Thanx to 'Pete McCabe' and 'arnie' for their thoughts on the subject and their relevant answers to the original question of Edward.

I agree with their analysis, but nevertheless still wonder a bit about the quitness of this forum.

Looking back/tracking back via the search function and locking at certain issues, I have the feeling that 'earlier' there was a bit more 'traffic' also on this forum here.

I have however to admit, that the participation of the members of this forum -mostly subscribers of 'Genii'- in 'any' discussion, is highly depending on the matter discussed, so if and when relevant and interesting issues are brought up, this also might result in more postings/answers re the subject in question.

Just an thought, I don't have any particular issue in mind.

I can only speak on this subject from my perspective.

The problem I have at those other forums, other than the incredable amount of flaming, is the fact that they all seem to have too damn many "rooms". The Magic Cafe has to have at least 40 coverning even the most minute subject available. The Genii forum has, what I believe, a managable amount of "rooms" to post in.

As well, I've noticed that the Genii forum seems to cater to a more (dare I say it?) literate crowd, (Spelling aside)with a great deal of actual experience. So while other forums will have very, very long discussions about the latest magic toy, here there seems to be more discussions of books, sleights and people.

Oh yes, and more importantly, the posters here seem to wait to post until they have something to say. They don't just spout off on any subject just to be heard or to increase the amount of posts number so they can seem like a big shot.

The opening page of the Genii Forum has a list of the number of people online the moment you log on. There are roughly three times the number of members regularly viewing, so we have between 5000 and 6000 registered members, and about 15,000 people total seem to look at it.

I'm glad most of them aren't asking questions that are better answered at someplace like The Magic Cafe.

I've been reading this forum for a long time. This will be my 2nd post ever. This forum seems like a college class. Complete with intelligent students, and very experienced professors. In these classes you remain quiet, pay attention, and listen unless you have something worthwhile to contribute. You learn more in an environment like this. The information is pure and unpolluted with useless posts and dialog.
Other forums seem more like a bar. It's got people shouting and fighting and swearing. Occasionally it's possible to engage in an intelligent conversation but often these conversations are hijacked by someone who has "l33t skilz" and all sense of continuity is lost.

GF is by far my favorite of the two internet forums in which Ive participated, for a variety of reasons, some of which are cited in this thread. But hearing the Caf knocked around with glee or contempt has always made me feel uncomfortable. GF and the Caf are two very different forums, and seem to serve (in large part) two very different audiences. And thats as far as the objective qualitative (sorry for the apparent oxymoron) analysis can go between the two, IMHO. Vive la difference! Someone once observed that the conceited intellect tends to suffer a significant learning handicap in comparison to the one lacking conceit. Clay

Thank you Bill.

Cam,
I participate at the Cafe also. Yes it is the forum to which I was referring in my post.

Each forum has it's uses. After I'm done with my college class, I like to go hang out at the bar. ;) .

At the cafe you can get a quick response to almost any question. But there are no guarantees that you won't get flamed or get smart alec responses or useless information. I mostly use the cafe's search. But even that gives me mountains of posts irrelevant to my query.

On the other hand... You tend to get more educated responses and more thoughtful posts here at GF. I usually come here to keep up with the latest trends and buzz and links. All my searches here tend to be very useful.

I actually like The Genii Forum and The Magic Cafe both. For different reasons though.

There are forums that are IMO very bad and they will go nameless in this post. Most of the uzerz in thoze places have super handz and would mess me up wuzzap!

Wow look at me I'm up to 3 whole posts! I hope to continue to contribute.
