Re: Your Views on Cups & Balls and One Cup Routines
Hi Alfred--I also agree that bringing out the three balls from the pocket at the beginning is decidedly less magical than producing then from the wand or under the cups. Charlie Miller must have thought this as well cuz he starts with just one ball and gradually splits it into three. This is describ...

Allright Alfred--here's Michael Skinner's Impromptu Cups and Balls with 3 teacups, cherries, and a butter knife as a wand. It was an appearance on the Johnny Carson Show in June 1973. Steve Pellegrino sells the PDF tutorial of this routine:

For a while there when Gordon was the librarian at the Magic Castle, he released a number of packet style effects. Most or all were fantastic, and I snatched them up each time he released a new one. Mr. Bean is a devious fellow.

Re: Contemporary Presentation For Rising Cards
I'm looking for references for rising card methods that use any sort of cut-out in the deck. I recall seeing a method where a rectangular section was cut out of half the deck so a forefinger could poke in and push up a card, but anything like that would be of interest. I'm not interested in mechani...

Thanks Ted! It appears that B'Wave may have been the last effect Burger performed. Not surprising since he considered it the greatest packet trick of the 20th Century. I always liked his decree that magic is best performed after dark.

You're welcome Alfred! Page's story reminds us that props can quickly take the credit for the magic. A rising card effect with a deck that was not shuffled and handled prior to the reveal will look suspicious. Great show Alfred! The late Patrick Page had a column in Pabular called "The Pageboy Speaks..." In the January 1975 issue, he described a gig at a restaurant where midway thru the event he dipped into his case and pulled out his Devano deck. After several performances with it, two people a...

Great story Alfred! You could have also picked The Two Lovers card. When she turns it over as her free? selection, you ask: Us? Thanx Leonard. Or you can beef up the applause by piping in prerecorded applause thru the loudspeakers at the end as some Vegas performer do. The audience can't tell if it's coming from them or the loudspeakers. Humans have terrible directional hearing. You can hear the cop or ambulance siren coming but figuring o...

Thurston sent Blackstone a telegram in 1928 asking him to stop performing the Floating Lady. An effect that Kellar ripped off from Maskelyn, and Carter ripped off as well. The blood is already on our hands.

The method doesn't matter. The effect doesn't matter. What matters is that Josh Jay was on Jimmy Fallon and he did a great job. The effect was obvious, transparent--yet he did a great job? If Jay wanted to go the mentalism route, I would have preferred watching a good Confabulation effect, or maybe a book test, or perhaps Kurotsuke. A Harry Anderson giant monte type of effect would have worked. A Multiple Selection routine, or three minutes with a three foot piece of rope and a pair o...
