Re: The Struggling Juggler

Some major intersections and crossstreets where cars have to frequently stop for a red light, often finds a youth juggler taking advantage of this opportunity to practice and pass a hat with his/her 3 minute act. I witnessed one such performance by a young African American kid juggler who stepped ha...

I’m looking also to preserve the patina of old silver coins as well when cleaning as I don’t want to loose the background contrast that give old coins that aesthetic look. Overcleaned coins loose their character in my opinion. Dawn Liquid Soap & Warm Water Bath White Vinegar Bath Toothpaste &...

I want to share an interview with you that I did with the legendary, Harry Lorayne a few years ago. I've done many of them, but this is probably my favorite. First, Harry shares a funny story about a time when he and his wife, Renee, jump out of a moving train in Italy. He then shares the story of ...

I don't think they are too small. The poly sleeves are 2 5/8 x 3 5/8. I have some of these “Ultra Pro” soft type sleeves with the same dimensions, only they have a matte black back on one side. They fit 3-4 playing cards no problem. 5-6 gets kind of tight but the flexibility will still accommodate ...

“Cultural appropriation” is such a heavy and interesting concept I was not aware of. After a brief overview, there is no question that there is a bit of cross-fertilization going on here in the choosing of titles for books on card tricks. Racherbaumer is obviously a broad-minded well-read individual...

I don’t think this was specific to Billy but a regional observation which he played on for comic stereotypical effect (along with his old age). American comedy such as SNL and even 90s children’s cartoons parodied this trademark mumbled English (see Animaniacs). During my teens I got to listen to Bi...

Another vote for Rafael Benatar. He is also a musician and the way he patters and talks is very Latin/Spanish and therefore very romantic/expressive and beautiful to listen to. Also add Billy McComb for very same reasons mentioned by Mark.

Larry Jennings too along with Max Malini.

When I try to recall Juan Tamariz live back in 2012, I don’t get any specifics on details. Steinmeyer’s forward to John Carney’s Book of Secrets gives an extended passage by Devant from Our Magic which ends with the following sentence:

“On being asked afterward what the conjurer did with a billiard ball, the spectator probably replied, ‘Oh, all sorts of things.’”

I stand corrected…
Cohen clarifies the psychology of tropical culture and it’s outsiders on page 48 of his book on Malini. It’s the last paragraph that talks about one of his signature tricks. But the insight here is illuminating.

I almost forgot that the Philippines at one time was like the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. I have some coinage from this era reflecting this union in an almost “two-faced” design. I don’t think “the locals” on the island meddled much with European and Asian conjuring. There was a sort of triba...

I get the inclination that “the butler” may have been privy and played a role in some of Malini’s after dinner party deceptions to high-ranked officials. Coca-cola is the official drink of the Philippines. But I had no idea that magic as a pastime was even taken seriously there, let alone in the 1920s. I think Malini may have stopped over there as well. I recall the anecdote told by Ricky Jay on his 52 Assistants show of Malini’s dinner table poultry...
