Re: "Everyday" objects that aren't any more

Of all the items a magician might use as a prop, I believe the coin purse is probably the most obsolete (anachronous?). I have seen wallets with a coin pocket, but not lately. The closest thing to a coin purse I have ever seen anyone carry was one of those soft plastic, oval-shaped things with a sli...

Re: Effects for those who believe in spiritism

I recall a story about Bob Steiner who went on Australian radio to perform a psychic stunt for the audience, using his energy to start up broken clocks and such. He later explained on air that it was all fake only to receive phone calls telling him that he was wrong, that he really did perform these...

Re: Daryl's Death at The Magic Castle

Daryl was indeed a master of the craft. He was the main act at one our local assembly's banquets a couple of years ago. It was amazing to watch him entertain the entire audience, magicians and non-magicians alike, for more than 30 minutes with just a few pieces of rope. Many of the effects were righ...

If I may be allowed to digress a bit, rather than splitting a card, I have read that it is preferable to sand down one side of the card until the center of the card is reached. I believe it was Steven Youell who gave this advice. It has been a while since I have made special cards, but I believe I u...

I am not an expert in the field, but it is my opinion that judging which books will be collectible or gain in value over the years is a difficult task. It is disappointing to see that a book I bought for say, $80.00, is going on eBay or Abebooks for $30.00. I recommend buying books that interest the...

Not to cloud the issue, but Hocus Pocus magic supply also lists this book as available, same price. I would call before ordering if you go this route, as they sometimes take a day or two to remove listings for out of stock items.

This shows up frequently in Bicycle cards bought in a brick from Costco and Sam's Club. Definitely not something new, as I noticed this discrepancy in some decks more than fifty years ago when I first started to learn card magic. Not quite as far back as the 1800's, but close enough.

A few years ago I was at a blackjack table in a popular Las Vegas casino. At one point, the dealer ran the cards through a reader of some sort and I asked what he was doing. He said the machine read the cards (value and suit) and counted them to make sure the deck(s) was complete by reading invisibl...

The only time I would ask a magician or any celebrity to sign an autograph is when purchasing a book or something similar. I made it to Soapy Smith Night at the Castle for the fourth year in a row and had a really great time, as usual. Many of the party-goers were in 1890's period costumes, adding to the ambience of the event, which is essentially a raucous gambling night (with "Soapy dollars," not legal tende...

Anyone who would use a speech at a magic convention to attack a fellow magician and prominent publisher in the field, and later bans that person from attending future conventions needs to be sacked. Why did it take so long? If he was not actually fired, he should have been.
