Re: And the Academy (Magic Castle) Award Nominees Are...

The notion of a nomination committee makes sense (though the choice of name implied an elitist elements which is both off putting and not necessarily accurate.) For a committee system to work, the members of that committee must make a commitment to see each of the acts which work the castle, otherw...

Mr. Wagner is really one of the good guys in magic. Saw him at Magic Island and he was very kind to sit down with me (with Bob Knigge) in between shows. He blew my mind with his killer estimation work--really amazing stuff!

There should be a member number on the back of the guest pass you received from the Castle Member. You should be able to use that to access the website to buy tickets. (the announcement mentioned a price for members and a price for guests--I also think you have to make reservations for dinner also).

AFAIK VHS copy protection was to stop VHS to VHS copying. If you are playing the VHS signal out into a DVD recorder, then there is no way it can stop you doing that, technically. You are doing the equiv of pointing a camera at a cinema screen. AFAIK. If a VCR tape has Macrovision copy protection, m...

Quick question for those of you who own Steve Draun's Real Man's Wallet (made by Murphy's) According to the printed instructions, the wallet was to come with a "clear plastic slide". If you bought yours new, did you receive one with your wallet? It would seem that you would not need one to...

While I respect Bill's point, I don't honestly see this as either a new trend or a huge deal. People have been publishing books for years that use store bought props. Some authors (e.g., JG Thompson) more than others. That "trend" hasn't changed, just the medium. In addition, other lecture...

While I concur with Dustin that "good" magic can be done with odd props, I think the decision to use them is really a theatrical one. As Stan Allen and Mike Caveney have put it in the past: "Do I want the props to get the credit for the magic?" That's the inherent difficulty with...

Re: Video of Larry Jennings' Single Cup and Balls Routine

Larry Jennings was a brilliant magician; however, I think that this clip illustrates why most cup and ball routines fall flat on video--a static camera cannot be misdirected, and when subjected to this unblinking eye, the MO of this routine becomes apparent. This comment should not be construed as a...

Good magic is not about the props. John has the right idea; if you like the effect (which if memory serves is actually based on an old ideaa medallion as I recall), use it. Just be sure that the presentation explains the prop. An abandoned and haunted hotel would be just fine. Trying to get away wi...

To me, the "Room Service" prop is anachronistic in today's world since the vast majority of fine hotels (including Sheratons) don't use metal keys anymore. (In addition, the current Hocus Pocus prop looks a lot thinner in the picture than the Wayne original, if memory serves). A more moder...
