Matthew Field is right. You should start with something easier.

Maybe you could juggle 5 clubs at the birthday party instead.

This is pretty cool. I can imagine putting the nail and the block of wood on the table, covering it with a silk and then.....voila!

Re: performing for teenagers

I would add that there is a big difference in performing for a group of kids 13 years old (think Bar Mitzvah) and a high school grad night. In either case, I try to treat them as adults but I find the younger crowd to be more adversarial. My theory is that by the time you graduate high school, you h...

Re: How long to finish/master Card College series?

808, One of the reasons I love magic is that it is not only academic but also a performance art. You seem to be focused more on the academic aspect. That’s fine. Knowledge should precede ability but eventually you need to practice performing by actually performing. There are certain things you can’t...

I'll chime in with another vote for Knack Magic. It has a good selection of tricks with different props and skill levels. I bought the book because I was hired to give some lessons and I had never really learned beginning magic. I ended up using the trick called 'Mix Em Up' (Will the Cards Match?) i...

Re: Save $50 on Martin Gardner's Impromptu

If I had paid for a regular edition, I would have asked for a refund years ago because I could still buy the book when/if it finally comes out. However, I paid for 1 of 125 deluxe editions and I would rather have the book than a refund. I think it would be reasonable for Todd to offer a refund with ...

Thanks for the info Joe and Ted. The problem with taking money years in advance of publishing the book is that the money is long gone by the time you really need it to pay the printer. I don't think it was his intent to take money years in advance but he has been promising "6 months" for 9...

I also think Todd is an honest guy. I don't want a refund....I want the book. How many years has he been taking payment for this book? It i...

You don't have to be a performing magician to be awarded magician member status. I would recommend going in and talking about your collection, knowledge of magic history, books you've read and generally try to demonstrate that you are a serious student of magic. Of course, it would be nice to demons...

Re: Tom Stone's Definition of Magic

Trying to come up with a universal definition of magic is a worthwhile exercise in futility. It causes us to think about what we do, why we do it and what were trying to accomplish but no definition will ever be sufficient. This reminds me of the time I was at a magic convention and a couple of Myst...

I think birthday parties are an overlooked place to practice adult entertainment. Assuming you don't work 'blue' and the kids are 9 yrs old or more, you don't have to treat them as children for the whole show. Most of my stand-up material is appropriate for a family audience where the kids sit in fr...
