Re: Cold Reading

Whoever it was that had the "50 years of experience", whether they used the term cold reading, (even though that is what they were doing) prior to 1949 is not verified. You're right, unless the power that be say otherwise, I will also raise this question in the "History" section.

Re: Cold Reading

A new edition of "Nightmare Alley", will be published by June of next year.

Going back to the original topic/question, if others can cite references to the use of the term, "Cold Reading", before 1946, please let us know.

Cold Reading

I was looking for the earliest use of the term, "Cold Reading", as used by mentalists/psychics, while doing readings for groups or individuals. Not "stock" or "prepared", but the word "Cold Reading." Robert Nelson uses the term in his writings by the late 1940...

Re: MCA: Who's Next at Bat?

I was visiting Robert & Elaine Lund's newly opened museum in 1978, and Robert was amazed that I had just paid Mario Carrandi, $150 for a signed letter by Houdini. (People would be equally incredulous today, if they heard I was able to pay Mario only a $150 for a Houdini letter!) Mr. Lund declare...

Re: MCA: Who's Next at Bat?

I was saddened, but not completely surprised to read of David & Anita Meyer, wanting to pursue other interests and move on. I join the many who congratulate and THANK them for the many hours/years they devoted to the MCA. To often they spent many hours trying to please many, only to hear the com...

Re: Magicians who hate magicians!

I remember years ago, I was at the Nevada State Fair, performing in a carnival sideshow, and one afternoon, Siegfried walked in the tent. He was intrigued, as he had never seen before, the electric girl act or blade box illusion. While polite and cordial, it was obvious of his regard for himself, in...

Re: Here's what happens when no one gives you good advice...

I can understand the attempt to be topical...Ching Ling Soo, was supposed to have done his bullet catch, while performing in England, after some British and other "Foreign Devils" were shot during the Boxer Rebellion, to show, because he opposed the Boxers, how he escaped their bullets...a...

Roy Huston - RIP

Just heard that long-time show person, Roy Huston, died in Gibstonton, Florida a few days ago. Roy had worked spook shows, and many venues of outdoor & indoor show business, with an illusion show as well.

He was with it and for it.

Lee Grabel turns 90!

There is a good article in the May 18 San Francisco Chronicle, about Lee Grabel's 90th birthday party. I remember seeing Lee do an hour show in Santa Rosa, many years ago and I remember it as one of the best performances I've seen...He entered from the back, complete with cape and hat, walking down ...

Despite Uri's now read-between-the-lines statements, he hasn't really disowned the potential of his powers, whatever he now more openly leaves people to perceive. While his "no such thing as bad publicity may not always be true, (ask Senator John Edwards) , it has worked for him, more often tha...

Denis may be right, it is a new way to put/keep Geller before the public and make even MORE money...having his show marketed internationally, is no small success. Geller did note that capturing the public's attention in the 1970's, wouldn't have been as possible today with the internet/you tube, etc...

Re: Uri

I found Uri's appearance at that magician's gathering intriguing enough, plus the interview. Why Uri has gone in this direction, as well as his latest TV shows, is a puzzle, blurring the line that he had previously kept, apart from magicians...softening the persona/myth he had created. The interview ...

The above is true, ALL fire eaters/breathers get burned...also they often loose the enamel in their teeth. Remember it has always and will only be a street or sideshow act, you won't get rich doing it. Is it worth the risk/loss, in comparison to the low compensation? Long-time sideshow operator Pete...

Re: Malini Home In Hawaii

On his passport application, he states he was born on Oct. 3, 1875, not 1873, as some magic books, and web sites say.
Also other passenger lists, include an Anne Malini, with him.

I'm sure there are magicians in Hawaii, who know where his house and/or grave is.

An Oziar Malini died in Californin in 2002, but I couldn't find a Max Malini living or dying in Hawaii. Was his name once Malisi? He may have died in Hawaii, but may not have been in the Social Security system, or simply not noted. There has to be some Malini experts out there who have more data.

If you can call the library in Hawaii, (do you know which island he was on?) they might be able to look in the phone/city directory of the years he was there, and have the address. I could only find a Frank Malini, in Hawi, Hawaii, but his heritage is listed as Puerto Rican. The 1920 U.S. Census, ha...

Robert Nelson sold a mms for the Gyrating Tables, as did Thayer Studios, sold William Larsen's mms, decades ago. Robert Nelson first started featuring the "Secret Invention", as early as 1939, and later models were named, the "NEW Secret Invention". It IS likely, that if BIll Dodson didn't make the first ones, he did make most of them, certainly the best ones. Please remember, while the &qu...

Here is a question:
I found a reference to a company, named Daveco, Inc., located at: 15 West 34th Street, New York, N.Y.
Does anyone know/remember what this business was/did, and was it anything connected to show business, or______?

Thanks!

Harry Soll

Does anyone recall or have information of the late Harry Soll, who lived in Brooklyn, in the early 1960's? He worked for or owned a glass company back then. He may have had a connection or interest in Thurston and/or Dante in his earlier years.
Any information would be appreciated.
