Re: Anyone Get their Set of True Astonishments Yet?

Dustin, One other thing about Dunn's Deal is I'm not quite sure what the effect is. You have the astonishee(?) attempt to separate the cards into reds and blacks. Then you have them shuffle them back together. In the layman's eyes, this would destroy any order they may have created in their dealing...

Re: Paul Harris: True Astonishments

Hi Andrew, Thanks. I didn't buy from TAP, so I don't have access to the forums. And, I didn't think it out to that degree. You're probably right. One reason I thought of this is because I'm not wild about having to ask the person to tuck in their shirt, which just seems personally awkward. Without h...

Re: Paul Harris: True Astonishments

A quick question, since "Belly Button" is your favorite. I wondered if, logically, the trick would be better if the button was actually pinned to the shirt facing the other way as opposed to sliding down the inside of the shirt. I don't think it would be that difficult to alter the handlin...

Re: Anyone Get their Set of True Astonishments Yet?

Just to add to what I wrote above, which in reading back reads too much like the kind of quick reactions to a laundry list of effects that seems to constitute an online review these days, I'll echo what Richard said. This set is pretty great, but it's not because this or that individual effect is a ...

Re: Anyone Get their Set of True Astonishments Yet?

I will never buy this set of DVD's. I haven't bought a DVD...well, I guess I should say I haven't bought a magic VHS tape in a very long time. So, for those who have the AOA series, why should they buy this DVD set? Well, if you'll never buy them, and you haven't bought a magic instructional video ...

Re: Anyone Get their Set of True Astonishments Yet?

Are you guys saying that this is a set of DVDs without verbal explanation and no accompanying book? And that supposedly is a good teaching tool? It might be an artsy thing to do, but it ain't a good teaching tool. No, I'm saying that the combination of the performances (sometimes multiple ones, or ...

Re: Anyone Get their Set of True Astonishments Yet?

What do you think about the explanation segments that have no spoken instructions, only titles on the screen? I like the teaching. I think the combo of the simple, speech-less, text-on-screen approach and then the Phootnotes in which Paul offers other thoughts is the best of both worlds. And I like...

I'm going to say "happy birthday" as well. I don't know Jon personally, but the column is one of my favorites in Genii. When I started reading Genii a couple of years ago after a decades-long hiatus from magic, I kind of resented that the column was two pages of material that wasn't always...

Not very magical and something I would never perform. I watched the special with a few folks and ALL of them independently constructed the method. Culling is a very difficult move to master. Even culling a single card invisibly is tough. It really is something that should best be taught one on one. So much of it is based on the feeling of the cards in your hands--it's hellish to describe. Thanks for posting that. I've also read the various de...

I'm not someone who thinks exposure is a big concern in magic today. Sorry. That said, I was irritated by this article. I'm of two minds here. I took a very long hiatus from magic and picked it up again in adulthood. Discovering magic DVDs I picked up one by a well known and prolific creator. There were 30 or so effects on the disk and I currently use none. In fact, there was something about the multitude of effects ...

Re: Where to go in Paris?

There are several magic stores in Paris, although some are just tiny shops without much selection. The two I'd recommend visiting are Duvivier's shop, Mayette Magic (8 rue des Carmes) and Magic Dream (18, Rue George Bernard Shaw). The latter probably has a bigger selection. I can't remember what the...

New Yorker article

Hi everyone, Just joined the forum. I've been a longtime Genii reader -- used to buy it as a teenager in the '70s and then took a two-and-half-decade break from magic. Into magic again, I buy it once more every month and try to reinvigorate my now-atrophied skills. As a first post, I thought I'd not...
