Re: Do you sue?

The quickest way not to have clients is to sue your clients. I use a combination of a deposit and a buy-out clause (either party can cancel for any reason by paying the other party the full performance fee (the exceptions mentioned by David are included). This not only helps to buffer against cancel...

Jim totally guessed correctly. And to be honest, seems like you are saying the same thing here. Unless I have a set on Letterman then anything I say is invalid? "I'd like to see you try..." Nope. And I'm honestly a touch disappointed -- I thought you English guys were good at the whole cl...

Re: Close-up Magic on Letterman

Just saw the Carney clip. I know of John's work only through his writing and very old performance footage, and was interested to see how it would translate into the micro attention span world of late night TV. I was impressed! He was genuine, charming, on-the-ball...he actually talked to Letterman i...

Re: Close-up Magic on Letterman

I fail to understand the argument Mr Marsh, and others make. Namely, unless you have been on TV you cannot criticise someone on TV. Odd, I've heard that argument in the past and agree with you about it. I certainly don't think you need to be on TV to criticize what you see; and have no idea why my ...

Re: Close-up Magic on Letterman

Reading these comments, I was expecting to be p*ssed at Letterman; I have had it hammered into my head that every show is a collaboration and the host is responsible knowing when to shine, and knowing when to let the act shine. I'm also a huge believer that rhythm is critical to performance, and hat...

I have no idea how technical in nature your outsourcing projects were, what I do know is a performer -- who has no background in design/coding that I am aware of -- who got an extremely effective website through eLance. His experience was phenomenal. Your mileage may vary.

Let me second Damian, and add that great resources for things like this are guru.com and elance.com ... you can get fantastic designer/coders from India to pull together a site that, domestically, would run you around $2,500; for $250. It is amazing the kind of quality free lance work you can get; a...

The cool thing about ordering it from someone else: how to mail it becomes their problem, not yours, and they've already figured out the hurdles because it is a basic issue for their business. And clearly folks have figured this out (I can't imagine that Denny Haney walks to Theatre Effects to stock...

I have to echo what's been said above; perhaps there is a way of doing it -- but in the current environment I see zero upside to trying. There are methods of describing such processes which elicit the strategies used and personal preferences of the artist.

Jon, do you mean that you are waiting for Berglas to publish his work? He has.

While I'm very interested to read the Kaufman write-up, let's not pretend that the piece is unpublished -- there is a long write-up in the Britland book.
