Re: ERDNASE

Professor Evans' research should be investigated by everyone interested in the mystery of Erdnase. It's a fascinating account. Friends with Houdini? Perhaps rubbing elbows with Vernon? Amazing!

It's the truncated version with only 178 pages so not as collectible as other Drake copies. Indeed, because it's not often mentioned in the ongoing conversation, I wonder how many folks realize that there's 30 or so pages of card tricks missing from this particular Drake edition? Yes, if the last t...

Re: Marked Cards - on edges
The Devil's Deck, Tarbell's take on the edge-marked deck, can be found in Volume Eight, page 140, of the Tarbell Course. It was also in the original Tarbell System from 1927. Richard, as most of you know, did an admirable job creating this final volume of Tarbell. I came up with the two color variat...

Re: Swindle Cut Aces
My favorite version of this routine is Breakless Aces by Patrick Stenberg which is in the December 2005 issue of Magic Magazine , page 96. As indicated in the title you don't need to hold a break in the initial cutting sequence and it's quite fair in that regard. The turnover of the four Aces never ...

As an addendum to this thread, The Rising Card does not appear in the first edition (1634) of Hocus Pocus Junior, The Art of Legerdemain Discovered . An early variant does appear in Henry Dean's Whole Art of Legerdemain or Hocus Pocus in Perfection . Although even that description (1795, 11th editio...

Re: Dai Vernon on the "mem deck"?
In Volume Eleven of The Vernon Revelations videos and dvds, Vernon describes his method of memorizing a deck of cards and describes an effect where a card is removed and, due to the memory cues, determined which card was missing. So, yes, Vernon did use a memorized pack.
Re: ERDNASE
After doing some research I’ve concluded that the word “from” in the Erdnase description of the Eight Kings setup is indeed an error. The following books from before and after the publication of The Expert at the Card Table all show “for one sick knave” as the last four words in the doggerel. The on...
Re: ERDNASE

Tarbell and Buckley
Greetings!
Does anyone have information on the relationship between Harlan Tarbell and Arthur Buckley? Or perhaps know anyone who does?
I'm aware they were close friends but I'm looking for some facts on their joint business enterprises.
Thanks!

Re: Your opinions wanted: what do new magicians need to know about the history of magic?
Susan- You ask an important question and one we should address. The history of conjuring really is an important topic for young magicians and I do understand if they're confused about it because of lack of knowledge. When I was researching Tarbell in what was later to become (with Richard Kaufman's ...

Re: A Brief History of Magic on the Internet
A notable omission from your dialogue with Jim Sisti was The Magicon , a forum for magicians begun by myself, Martin Lewis and Bill Palmer in 1986. This was initially a chat group but we expanded to our own forum BBS system where I published the first online magic newsletter, Abracadata . We had mor...

Re: When Have You Disagreed With A Magic Icon?
I disagree with the ploy used by Ron Wilson (and others) to break the ice for walk-around performers by "finding" something lying on the floor and asking if someone lost it. First of all, why would you want to pick up something off the floor, let alone handle it and hand it to people? It w...

I too thought Jerry was a wonderful magician who will be missed. He was the first person I ever saw who could handle a deck of cards and make it look like real magic. This was at a "Day of Magic" in Galion, Ohio around 1971 and though he was running a dealer's booth, he said, "What th...
