Re: Hark, I Hear The Cannons Roar
I love the Michael Close book. I have about three dozen favorites in my notes but I missed this one. This makes my day! Does anyone know the origin of this one? The audience at a piano recital were appalled when a telephone rang just off stage. Without missing a note the soloist glanced toward the w...

Iron Knot
I’m trying to find instructions for the Iron Knot. Once at a county fair in Idaho, a guy showed me what he called an Iron Knot. He said German steelworkers used it to lower items to the ground. As soon as the load touched down and the tension was relaxed the knot fell open and you could bring the ro...

AC Top Hat
It’s not pretty, but I had to dig out my old ‘air conditioned’ top hat. I had a 3-hour strolling gig outdoors in 105-degree heat. https://youtu.be/-OjzqJY1FLw Two micro fans and four AAA batteries. One is the intake, the other is the exhaust. Next year I’m going to make one with a straw top hat. I'v...

Re: Which monkeys should you do magic for?
I read about a magic shop owner that had a cat that would find the spectators selection from a spread deck. Does anyone recall who that was? I think it was in The Linking Ring, '60s or '70s.
The method is really clever and practical. I'm not kidding.

Re: Guest invitation to the Magic Castle, September 2023
Long introductory patter isn’t my cup of tea. By all means, draw me into the trick, set an emotional hook, but get on with it. Whenever I see a magician thoughtfully walk to the center stage, hold his tented fingers to his lips, pause, and say; “I’d like to take you… (excruciatingly longer pause) on...

Re: “Browning” copper coins?
I used to do a tidy little Spellbound routine. I kept my English penny shiny for contrast. The first time I performed it in a dim nightclub, I was surprised to see that the coins looked about the same. The red neon on the beer signs made the Kennedy half look dark and dulled the shine on the copper.

Re: Hocus Focus: Deliberate Practice, the Myth of the 10,000-Hour Rule and the Illusion of Mastery
Back in the early 1990’s, when camcorders were pricy, I recorded my practice sessions from different angles. I had an especially hard time with HPC. The video helped a lot. I also recorded my stage rehearsals. I assumed I was doing nice three quarter turns from left to right and back, and that my ha...
