Jarshaur wallet
This is in Fulves' Self-Working Paper Magic , item No. 4. It is easy to construct and its features are truly magical. Basically, a flat object (for instance, a Same on Both Sides card) put inside the folds of the center panel will remain in place while the side panels change places. I don't remember...

Re: Dai Vernon’s “Mental Die”
I used to do the version in Self-Working Table Magic. Didn't know it was Vernon's, although I did know it was not Carter's, since the latter uses 10 cards and it is not as elegant. Good to know that Vernon improved that. Another source is "The Red Card Prediction", in Corinda, step 10, p326.

"Card to Wallet - Himber Note Pad", by Dan Tong. Found in Jerry Mentzer's Card to Wallet - The Book. It's a routine comprised of several effects. Really strong and practical.

"The New Nightmare Effect", by Annemann, makes use of this gaff. He does not say whether he created it (at least in the book, "Annemann's Card Magic").

Re: Memorized Deck Question
The method I have been using for this effect is the one Marco posted. Very effective. For the last reveal, there is no handling of packet, as one can resort to key card.

Re: Packet trick creator info requested
Brad mentions Nick Trost in his original post, and in fact there is a packet trick by Trost that fits the description: "Trick-Kards", in The Card Magic of Nick Trost, p 211. Hollins and Schwartz are cited in the text. Considering the detailed info generously provided so far, I believe ther...

Re: Strange story of genuine(?) telepathy
Aristotle discusses this kind of report in "On Prophesying by Dreams" ( Parva naturalia ), employing a probabilistic approach similar to the one proposed by John Allen Paulos in Innumeracy . Ray Hyman quotes the explanations by Freud in his classic about cold reading. One of these is very ...

Thank you for all the detailed information, Joe. To contribute to 1) , there is "Blindsight", by Nick Trost ( The Card Magic of Nick Trost ), and the one-deck version by Bob Neale, "Probability Pack", in Life and Death and Other Card Tricks . Also, it seems 4) and 9) use the same...

Re: Showing Cards Not In Deck
The first one that comes to mind is "The Invisible Card", by Simon Aronson (in Try The Impossible).
Also, the techinque Paul Harris uses in "Las Vegas Leaper" to have the spectator count cards in their own hands and not notice that there are extra cards.

Although it does not use rough and smooth, a related and very strong effect is "Los Angeles Open", by Gordon Bean. It appeared in his marketed "Joker Joker".

Thanks for sharing this. There is a brief explanation in Martin Gardner's Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic, on page 493 of the original edition. Good suggestion in BOP about practicing with pegs (or bulldog clips these days).

He has also written and directed "Fermat's Room", a good mathematical thriller, in the vein of "The Oxford Crimes" (the novel on which this movie was based was recommended by Jon Racherbaumer some years ago through Genii). "Fermat's Room" is well conceived and executed,...

Re: Lightning calculators
An excellent resource is Mental Prodigies (Greenwood Press, New York, 1952), by English magician Fred Barlow. It contains biographies of many of the classic lightning calculators (including the only woman among them). In the book there is also a section on magic. You will find several gems there. My...

Re: Gaffs, gimmicks, fekes and...?
Henry Hay includes definitions for 'gimmick' and 'fake' in his "The Amateur Magician's Handbook". I transcribe three lines from page 258: "On the authority of John Mulholland, a 'gimmick' is a secret device never seen by the audience; a 'fake' is a device seen by the audience, but not...
