Re: Maskelyne's Book of Magic (Submitted by Vince Hancock)

At all events, I think that young magicians should be handy with tools and start a small workshop where they can make and invent some of their own tricks. It is obvious that a new trick that is invented by the performer must be more successful than any other, because it is as novel and up-to-date a...

Re: Happy 4th of July from The Genii!

Happy July 4th, Richard! When I was a kid, the tradition of going to my grandparents came to feel like an absolute necessity. A big backyard provided space for picnic and ping-pong tables. I gave a show for family members one year. It included a Square Circle I made from cardboard and spray paint. T...

Re: Maskelyne's Book of Magic (Submitted by Vince Hancock)

So does Maskelyne's apology that it was "without my knowledge" imply that the whole thing was ghosted? Edit: Ah, I see the document that says yes. I'm not convinced all of it was ghostwritten, Jack. There's some degree of reminiscing that harks back to his White Magic family history accou...

Re: doors and movie magic

From Fantasy Book Critic's Mihir Wanchoo: "Tuesday, June 23, 2015 [F]ar out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to “fold” dimensions, it shrinks distances ...

Re: Maskelyne's Book of Magic (Submitted by Vince Hancock)

For that matter perhaps it did not mention any averse reactions, severe averse reactions or whether past performance is an indicator or future performance... Although each issue of "Goldston's Magical Quarterly" appeared to have new book reviews, I did not find any pertaining to this work...

Re: Maskelyne's Book of Magic (Submitted by Vince Hancock)

Thank you, Dustin. My interest is primarily to stimulate some discussion in this forum, especially given the accessibility of the current title. As an enthusiast/amateur, I expect to learn as much, if not more, as any other participant. I have not yet been able to track down the specific passages fr...

Re: Credits in Royal Road To Card Magic

Thank you very much for the information. Any thoughts on who the performer on the ocean liner was? By 1949 (the edition of RRTCM I have), was performance on such vessels as common or more common than it is today? There is this mention of Vernon in another post ( http://forums.geniimagazine.com/viewt...

Re: Credits in Royal Road To Card Magic

Hi there, I have two questions. 1. Who is the performer mentioned in "Do It and Fail?" ...while making an ocean voyage, performed it at the dinner table every night... 2. Who is the inventor of the effect? Sebastian, thanks for starting this topic. I searched the forum to see if I could fi...

American Magic before Lewis & Clark

Hi there, I've read a few anecdotes about professional magicians performing "in the field" for a number of different reasons: military and/or diplomatic. Perhaps the most famous is Robert-Houdin in Algeria, with productions and vanishes, implying French superiority in armaments and disappe...

Re: Tightrope walk - Niagara Falls tonight

There's a one-hour special about stunts at 8pm, then the main attraction is from 9 - 11pm. ABC TV. Apparently, a live show. Is the scarcity of live, network broadcasting (compared with taped, edited programs) what prevents magic and the related lively arts from working as well on TV? Or is being th...
