David Regal published a really funny routine along these lines (which he performed on Fool Us, I think).

A while back, CardShark was selling off old remaining stock of these on ebay for a really good price.

It's funny: I learned the word tyro exclusively from reading magic books where it's use is not uncommon. Much like the words compeer, cognoscenti, and hoi polloi, I've not encountered the term outside of the magic context. Then again, maybe it just means I've read a whole bunch of the Rock's writing...

I should mention after I wrote the original post, I tried the Farmer technique: sprayed the cards with a light coat of matte fine art fixative and then after drying, applied the Teflon powder.
