Re: Et, tu, Legerdemain?
Quite right Daved! The music term is spelled leggiero, and I don't know the precise etymology. That expression has been around for centuries, as Italian dominated (and still continues to this day) music expressions, so it just might be an old spelling -- as major languages evolve over time, a letter...

Re: Et, tu, Legerdemain?
Thank you Bill for the dictionary definition.
In sheet music instructions the French "Leger" (It. Leggiero) means to play the passage with light, graceful swiftness. One teacher taught that the passage, however dexterously challenging, should sound and even look almost effortless.

I wonder how the OED defines the word? (Especially the first known literary quotation of the word.)

Re: The passing of a friend
I met Dick Oakley way back in 74, while training at Millington NAS. He was a terrific guy -- his Benson Bowl routine was the first I ever saw, and I hadn't heard of Roy Benson then. Dick took this teenage magic newbie under his wing -- I can still hear him singing his crazy version of "Smoke Ge...

Re: Magic Castle difficulties

Re: Magic Castle difficulties
Poor performance of a magic effect has no place in the Castle. I agree with Jamy Swiss - it reminds me of part of the SAM pledge against interfering in other magicians performance. The Jeff McBride thing I think is an exceptional example -- that's more of an extension of the magical experience for e...

There are small things we can do as members. Larry Horowitz and I have started declining our 20% Volunteer Discount at MC Meals until we're out of this mess. That's a great observation Jonathan; I'll add that, had he read "Our Magic", the axiom on Unity of Effect might have dissuaded him from tacking on the mentalism bit, which weakened the overall effect. (If the reason for that part was an attempt to add his signature to the effect, the fact ...

Re: The President of the Academy of Magical Arts RESIGNS
I'm not that keen on the idea Dustin, not as a fairness issue, but the fact that if the Membership knew then what the state of our finances were going to be now, there'd be a different makeup of the BOD already. (i.e. we might not have elected people who made poor / non-existent oversight judgments.)

Richard's right about payment processing expenses.
Of course this financial statement really needs a chart-of-accounts to make real sense of.
And along with that, more detailed information -- available to AMA Members, online.

Re: The President of the Academy of Magical Arts RESIGNS
The President of the AMA is also member of the BOD - he/she is chosen by the directors to preside over the BOD Meetings and perform the functions of the President - the choice is normally made after a new BOD is elected, so in this case we lost a Director who happened to be President. So NPH is acti...

A rather interesting set of observations, Undercut. Perhaps he has some reason for wanting to delay this process. It's only pure speculation on my part, however: 1. It was originally announced that the new Director would be appointed during this meeting. 2. Your points on the rules look straight-for...

One of the best articles I've read in Genii. Hats off to Roberto and Richard. Having studied classical piano for a long time, I think that this is a very useful analogy on the practice of Magic. I never thought that de Pachman would ever be mentioned on the Genii forum -- I'm pleasingly impressed!

The Castle's E&G committee met on this and sent a unanimous recommendation to the BOD; subsequently the BOD expelled him from the AMA, and declared that he's to be refused entrance to the Castle in perpetuity.
