Re: What books (magic & allied) are you currently reading?
I just finished the copy of Talisman I received on renewing my subscription. I recommend the book highly. Though no Apocalypse, it's got a lot of fun ideas, essays as well as tricks, and it gives a great impression of their magic scene at the time. It was a freakin' WEEKLY in the days of typewriters...

Re: What books (magic & allied) are you currently reading?
I'm reading the book of all issues of 'Talisman' magazine published by Genii. (I renewed for three years and got it for $15!) I'm going through it and taking notes. Although not revolutionary, it's got some interesting ideas sprinkled throughout.

I agree, it was great. The appeal of the subject wasn't universal (this lecture was actually part lecture!), but I'm so glad that there are Will Houstouns in this world, people who are willing to devote real energy to diving into older texts, mining them for valuable information. It was really impre...

I bought Paul's 'Hypno-Mental Self-Working Card Tricks' almost on a whim (how could you resist a title like that?!?!), and thought it was excellent. The 'self-working' wasn't the best part, it was the 'hypno-mental': very, very cool effects. I expect that this one is great too: how could you resist ...

PS1 is out of print. But last year I read that it was being reprinted, the same format as PS2.
But now PS3 is out and PS1 is still not reprinted.
Anyone know the status of the PS1 reprint?

My pass is a personalized approach learned from reading as many sources as I could, especially Expert Card Technique, Kaufman's DVD, and Steve Draun's work on the pass in Kaufman's book. Unlike many other sleights, in the end a pass is what makes sense to your own hands.

For me, good old fashioned Copper-Silver-Brass is the best coin magic. It's not so challenging for those interested in coin manipulation, but it packs a big punch. I think the basic plots are still the best: give me a good straight forward Gadabout Coin presentation and I'm happy.

I like John Zanders Loose Ends routine. It's not difficult, and there's lots of room for personalizing the routine, as well as improvising around it so that it can be as long or as short as you'd like. Sander's rope DVD is full of cool moves, but I don't have time to pick and choose. Loose Ends is a...

I think there will be a big difference with DVD's demise: I expect that DVD's will continue to be playable on computers for the foreseeable future. The material is excellent, and Kaufman's descriptions are very clear. So clear that I know EXACTLY why . . . I'll probably never be good enough to perform the material.
Think I'll hold off on the Dingle book for awhile.
