Something GREAT Coming from Al Schneider

It's been my great pleasure to have had Al Schneider as a columnist in Genii at various times since we took over the magazine in 1999. He's back, and his first column of the new series appears in our January issue, a variation of his effect "Hugs and Kisses." In our March issue, his second...

Re: Are magicians mostly universally disliked?

The "gotcha" way in which magic is sometimes presented is off-putting to many people.

People love magic if they're not made to feel foolish by the magician.

Re: Regarding the Pass

If you cannot execute a Pass while your hands are being watched then that doesn't count.

There are all kinds of sleights that I can get away with if no one is watching my hands, but I would certainly never consider that I can "do" them, nor would I use them in public.

Re: Regarding the Pass

I can't imagine what Ian is talking about. The Classic Pass is extremely hard to do well and requires many years of practice. An invisible or near-invisible Classic Pass is one of the most potent weapons a magician can have. Hofzinser (aka Herrmann) style passes are relatively simple in comparison. ...

Re: Larry Jennings "one ahead"

Jennings would say, for Triumph, that you secretly have half the deck reversed, and thus you are one ahead. I'd love to see him defend those methods where you don't secretly reverse any cards. In the Stars of Magic method, the false shuffle happens as the cards are apparently mixed, so you're not a...

Re: Larry Jennings "one ahead"

Larry said it all the time. I have an audio recording where he goes through an entire list of famous effects or routines as examples.
He truly believed it, but when he stated it, it sounded kind of like the Abbott and Costello routine 7 x 13 = 28.

Weber is the person whom I've heard about doing the rubber band gag more often than others.
He's also the only person I can remember seeing do it.

I have no recollection of anything by Charlie Miller in Magicana regarding the subject, but that only means I have not memorized all of Magicana.

Malkovitch is a thoroughly bizarre casting choice, but not as bizarre as Tony Randall in the original film from the early 1960s.

Having read every Christie book, no one touches Albert Finney in the part.

The previous two BBC Christie adaptations were very good, but I might skip this.
