If I had to guess, I'd bet that the biggest thing that keeps girls/women from participating is that when they do show up at magic functions, they get treated as girls/women (for example, hit on) rather than magicians. There is a head to head high card cutting routine in my book. It uses a regular deck and can begin with a legitimate spectator shuffle.
