Garrett Thomas has an eye-popping version of this plot. I saw him do it at the last Genii Bash, but I don't think he has published it yet. It is an incredible routine.

I really like Steve Valentine's 3 which is a version of the Dutch Looper that ends clean.

The Garrett Thomas routine is very popular with magicians but I can't see past the method myself. I know it's just my problem, and it is really brilliant, but I just see the method every time I watch it.

Both of the small books of card magic that Gardner wrote contain excellent material. Gardner didn't publish a lot of original card magic but it was all very good. Eugene Burger used one of the tricks professionally for many years.

But I think making something easier has to always be an improvement. No matter how skilled you are - something will always look a bit better if it is easier to do. It is nearly impossible to hide that element of tension that is not present in a self-working trick. This is important because magician...

But, Richard, are you SURE you can't give away your work for free?

The point of Genii having exclusive stuff is the value and incentive to subscribe.

That's not exactly the same as two magicians sharing or publishing a trick using the technique.

Re: Tracking down the history of a specific card-to-impossible location principle

So, some of these are new to me, so thanks, I appreciate it! There seem to be a few things here that come pretty close. Tarbell and Wimbrough both have this idea of a card already in the pocket becoming the selected card from somewhere else. I think it's a bit different than what happens later with...

Re: Tracking down the history of a specific card-to-impossible location principle

Forget my C.O. Williams mention, I was confusing it with the trick below. In the Encyclopedia of Card tricks, published in 1937, someone named S.H. Wimbrough published "Card to Pocket - Another Presentation" In that trick, an X card is shown at the beginning of the trick and put into the p...

Re: Tracking down the history of a specific card-to-impossible location principle

I'm not sure if C.O. Williams original card to pocket predates the Homing Card but the part of the method you are interested in is the same.

The only difference between them is one of timing within the routine and when the spectators see the X card in the pocket.

Bannon's trick is actually based on Luke Dancy's "Royale With Cheese" which was released as a download through Penguin. Personally, I think Bannon's handling is the best version of this trick to date.
