Re: SAMS Convention, May 1st - 3rd 2015

Wow.. not sure how to feel about this.. I was very happy to be there. This was one of the 'warmest' and most welcoming conventions I have ever been to.. What the weekend may have lacked in some areas was more than made up for by the personalities and feelings that pervaded the Salutation Hotel. My s...

When I saw the blurb I jumped on this.. I had the good fortune to spend a bit of time in Bob's house and see a few of these in person. so I was looking forward to this.. Just got it and like a few folks here, I am disappointed as well. It is indeed a catalog with very small representations of the co...

No offense taken, Richard. the voting was sooo skewed that my initial enthusiasm was quickly replaced by a backpedal away from this 'contest' .. cmon, Juan? Lennart.. ? I have visited and performed at the Castle pretty much twice a year for the past ten years. Everytime I was there, it was different than the time before. New rules, new nuances.. not always good and sometimes downright stupid.. but the new make up of the board instills optimism from me as well. I ag...

When I rolled into Snowmass in the summer of my 30th year, I knew nothing about magic. Watching Bob Sheets work that night was an epiphany. I think that bringing a lifetime of experiences into the performance of magic can be a good thing. There is a level of maturity that is present that simply isn'...

I had the opportunity of seeing Levent perform and lecture at MITR last Sept. I consider it to be the high point of the convention. His misers dream bucket was a wonderful combination of James Bond's Q and Macgyver... absolutely brilliant. The dvd set was encyclopedic in it's depth. A true scholar w...

Frank Shields Magic Bartender in the Bay area

I am looking for material about Frank Shields a magic bartender who worked in the SF Bay area for nearly 40 years. I have been in touch with Gene Matsuura, Pete Biro and a few other people, most notably a fellow named Marc McGuire who spent time with Frank at the Pony Club in Oakland. Unfortunately,...

the first trip to the Castle can be a bit overwhelming. Especially with the drunken crew you had to mingle with.. look at the bright side.. you didn't have to perform for them.. I did! and it wasn't any prettier from my angle. It's the bar business... some days are diamonds... some days are stones.....
