Re: 2009 NMO Houdini Awards Announced

As a past recipient of this award, (2007 Houdini Award for the best British Mentalist living in Sherman Oaks) I feel it is important to point out that the award, while wonderful and humbling in itself, was a stepping stone to greater things. In the two years since receiving the honor I have been pri...

Re: Ali Bongo - R.I.P

Ali Bongo was my hero. I have a picture of me with Ali in full regalia when I was 6, and an identical picture of me with Ali when I was 46 at the Magic Circle Centenary. He was a great, gentle, well spoken genius. Apart from his many, many creations he was a wonderful person. I wish his family and f...

Re: Murphy's Magic "new advertising policy" or how to encourage price fixing

I'm confused, does 000 (good name by the way) think that magic shops and even magic websites shouldn't make a profit? In this economy it's hard to even stay in business. Brent, the owner of the Magic Apple works really hard; actually cares about his customers; refuses to sell the "garbage"...

Re: Carney, Carny and Carne Holiday Party!!

It's always great for me and the kids to come to the Apple - it's even better when you have a party. Daniel, my 10 year old, is so used to seeing some of the best magicians in the country there that he is comfortable speaking with John Carney, Tony Clark etc. The party was great and the turnout was ...

Re: Advice on Castle Auditions

The most important thing that you can do is, whatever material you choose, do it competently. You will not fool the people at the auditions so don't even try. The audition committee tell you that they will not react, applaud or laugh - so don't go for applause or laughter. Just do whatever you do - ...

Matt Marcy New Show

I just got tickets to something that everyone in the LA area should know about. Matt Marcy, who is one of the best original magicians around, is debuting a new magic show that actually has a story as well as great magic. It's only on for 4 days (October 16, 17, 18 and 19) at the Ford Amphitheatre in...

Re: HUGE MAGIC PARTY and sale

It was really great. Many of the country's best magicians go to the Apple just to "hang out" and Saturday they were there in force. I had a great time\, as did my kids. The Apple is really a wonderful place, it reminds me of the way things used to be - but with new stuff every time I go.

Re: Dan Harlan's Lecture Schedule

I'm a little confused as to why people are knocking Brent and The Magic Apple. Not only is it great to have a "real magic shop", but it is the only place I know where, literally, some of the best magicians in the world go just to hang out. If anyone fell for the April 1 gag, for the third ...

I think a lot depends upon your definition of "sold". Simply put the Castle hasn't been "sold". While there may be an offer on the property, and while that offer may have been accepted "there's many a slip twixt cup and lip." We do not know if the buyre has proper fundi...

I heard that Jon Armstrong is competing at FISM and that he is being sponsored by the Castle. He is great and I am sure he will do well. Does anyone know who else has signed up to compete, either through SAM, IBM or the Castle?

Re: Anyone at the World Magic Seminar

First, I thought the film festival was a great idea. It was well attended and kudos to all who made the films. However, let's be honest, not all the films were great; a couple weren't even good, and, in my opinion one was unbelievably bad. The one shot in "Germany" was stunted, meaningless...

Much as I hate to disagree with The MagicApple - you don't know what you're talking about. Jason isn't just great, he's one of the best. His close up work at the Castle is wonderful. He has the personality, the chops, the "look" and just about everything else. On top of that he is one of t...

I was lucky enough to go to John's "Wonder Cabaret" at its last inception. Truly a wonderful evening of magic - in every sense of the word magic. Not only will I be going again, but I will take everyone I know - even my wife who hates magic and considers herself a "magic widow" b...

I saw Steve at The Magic Circle Centenary. His show was spectacular. His "Any Drink Called For" was something I had only heard about - from the old days - and was, in a word, magical. I wish he would come out to the West Coast (Maybe the Castle?) and give all of us a chance to see him. Not...

Re: Sylvester The Jester has a fallout with the Magic Castle

Danny is working the parlor this week and I spoke with him on Monday. I am very proud that he did come back to the castle - it would have been all too easy to "give in" to the pressure and refuse to work there. I don't think that Danny disagrees with the asessment of the problems in the pa...

David, that is exactly the way that I feel about the castle. I'm there at least once a week and it is an important part of my life.
Mitch, you are exactly right. Let's help save the Castle first and then look for the reasons.
Thank you for so eloquently stating the way many of us feel.

Re: Sylvester The Jester has a fallout with the Magic Castle

Could someone explain why Tom Frank is posting messages (allegedly) from Dan. We are hearing one persons side of the story (Tom's) and we are supposed to believe what is said. It would carry more weight if Dan actually said what he wanted to say instead of using a mouthpiece. Secondly, one bad show ...

Re: Sylvester The Jester has a fallout with the Magic Castle

I really like Dan's act and have for a number of years, however I was at the show the first night it was on, Monday, and there was a middle magician instead of a puppet act and Dan's act still fell flat. Around 4 or 5 of his effects didn't work (battery problems?) including exploding cake and art pi...

Thinking that I have more money than sense, I paid for Cosmos - worth every penny. One simple, undetectable, move and the audience sees a miracle. Like all good effects it's clean and simple and makes you think "why didn't I think of that?" Also fully examinable and while I think New World...
