Re: Understanding the Bermuda Triangle
For those who can read french, you can find a version with a REAL triangle in Imagik no. 28, July 2000 by Christian Girard under the title : Le Triangle des Bermudes (What Else?) Gary Plants's version Casino Royale is published in that same issue. His handling and presentation along with his wonder...

Re: Understanding the Bermuda Triangle
Pacioli and Da Vinci were good friends, and in fact, Pacioli gave math lessons to Da Vinci. Can anybody translate this? So unless there's strong argument to the contrary (like Da Vinci literally claiming he invented it), it seems far more likely that Pacioli showed the puzzle to Da Vinci rather than...

For those who've come to the past ones, this time around, the Saturday and Sunday sessions have been extended by an hour. Now they run from 2pm-6pm. So more magic and consequently more Weber.

As I am involved with the event (helping behind the scenes, and as guest lecturer for the first edition), my opinion is decidedly biased, but I had a ton of fun. I can also say that over 2/3 of the people who showed up in December are already signed up for round 2 in March. Jared, Mike & Paul ap...

Jack,
Actually, Paul performs Diplopia without forcing the colour. You are correct that it wasn't described in the original write-up but it WAS included in the Addendum to the manuscript, and he explains there why he originally held it back.

Re: ERDNASE
I downloaded and tried to get http://evllabs.com/jgaap/w/index.php/Main_Page running, but I think it's having trouble parsing the PDF files I have for Erdnase, Sanders, and Gallaway. I thought maybe someone else would like to take a shot at it though. I don't have the PDFs for Sanders or Gallaway, ...

I don't claim to be able to do anything beyond that. That is the general problem with your argument. Once you are able to do more I am happy to continue the discussion. I don't think you understand my argument at all then. So let me reiterate one last time. The evidence you've presented here is wea...
Re: ERDNASE
Derrick, it is very easy to shoot from the rafters and just throw out generalities like 'bad math' or 'lie with statistics'. You also said it is easy to write a similar analysis software, but you can't back up your claim. I have put up an expert opinion in favor of Edward Gallaway, which says: &quo...
Re: ERDNASE
Chris, My statement was based on the evidence provided here on this forum. You may have plenty of solid evidence from John Olsson but it has NOT been presented here. Also, I'm really just responding because you are using "bad math" to try and support your case. Avoid that, and I won't feel...
Re: ERDNASE
Jonathan, each such comparison, which includes other aspects, too, not just longest substring matches, costs $900. If you are able to raise the funds I am happy to have as many books analyzed as you want. I hope those other metrics are pretty good, because otherwise you are seriously getting ripped...
Re: ERDNASE
I love following this Erdnase discussion, and in particular how heated people get about their own candidates. Always a lively discussion. However, as a mathematician, this is the first time I think I have something important to add to the debate. So here we go. Chris, Richard's calculations are NOT ...

I was at the event last weekend and it was great. Packed room, and very receptive audience. The talk itself was interesting, and there were many examples of how our minds help to fool us, and even included a demo of Andrus's Tri-zonal space warp. Now to the magic. I've never seen Eric work much for ...

Another vote for Chuck Smith. He really solved the last card problem beautifully. I was lucky enough to get a chance to see him perform this in Buffalo in October, and the routine (as well as the thinking behind it) was fantastic.

The entire book is on nothing else but his Tenkai palm, including handling tips, angles, and of course tons of applications.

That's not right, Rafael. One should not be thinking in terms of sequences and cuts. It's sort of hard to explain but I'll give it a try. From the mathworld site that James referenced: "Derangements are permutations without fixed points." In the context of playing cards, a derangement is a...

James is right on the money. In fact, I remember this problem was first posed to me (in a slightly different form) in my first college probability course.
