Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

I think it’s a limited artistic road to take when you dictate the experience for a spectator in terms of black and white: In order to experience beautiful magic, you must meet this condition of not knowing the method(s) of my illusion, either before or after the fact. Beyond limiting ourselves artis...

Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

That anecdote doesn't prove anything. Spectators will always speculate, always have: Someone leans over and whispers "He's put it up his sleeve," or "She's got the ball in her other hand." This happens regardless of whether or not they have seen "exposure" videos. And b...

Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

The only exposure that hurts magic is exposure through poor performance . Such could and has been said of the arts in general (Plato) though our craft has the distinction of relying upon its technique remaining both unsuspected and undetected - which has us using the term exposure in a different se...

Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

But if all you do is sell secrets - you aren’t adding anything of value to the art form. You are merely profiting by selling tickets to your peep show - where sadly those being peeped haven’t consented to your representation. I think you should loose the peep show/porn analogy. It's a little inappr...

Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

Jonathan, your characterization of the show is seen through rose-colored glasses. The "hook" is not whether P&T give away a prize - its whether they are fooled by the acts (Hint: The title of the show gives it away). I wonder, would the show be the same hit if it was just "P&T...

Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

If one categorizes XX's videos as magic porn (Playboy, Hustler), then Fool Us must be the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue of magic. They come right up to edge, exposure-wise. And as far as "educating" the public that secrets aren't what's most important in magic, then P&T must be in ...

Re: Magic Community in TOTAL SILENCE as Youtube Magician EXPOSES Hundreds of Magic Tricks

When one knows the method - it becomes impossible to convey the experience of magic. One can experience the magic, and then learn the method without harm to the initial magic experience. I know that the standard line is that once a spectator learns the secret they will be disappointed and dismissiv...

The person's name who we are talking about is apparently not even allowed to be mentioned on this forum. With regards to the original complaint (the YouTube channel of XX), I watched several of his videos. I think it's telling that the CNN article Jack S. posted about the Y...

Re: Youtube LINKING Performances & Exposés

I am not advocating for magic trick secrets to be revealed to laypersons. As you say, RK, that's "nonsense." What I am saying is that we don't really know the effects of secrets being known, however they become available. We assume it's bad; the mystery is spoiled and the spectator is left...

Since these names can be used for both men and women, it would be reasonable and informative to refer to a male performer of card tricks who answers to one of these names as a "cardman". If that is so, how do we refer to the woman performer of card tricks on your unisex names list? In res...

We'll have more to discuss when a woman, transgender, genderfluid... decides to say how they'd like to be called. We already have an example from Laura London. She has stated (in the "Magic is Dead" book), that she prefers to be called a sleight of hand artist. And just because no women h...
